  • Preview: Blackhawks (6-4) at Wild (6-2)
    Date: October 30, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Wild have waited nearly six months for another chance at the Chicago Blackhawks. They may be catching the defending Stanley Cup champions at the perfect time.

Mired in a scoring slump and minus their top defenseman, the Blackhawks head to Saint Paul for the teams' first meeting since last May's Western Conference semifinals.

Chicago (6-4-0) was able to win its first three games with Duncan Keith sidelined by a recent knee procedure, but it's scored just three goals over its last three. Corey Crawford was in net for consecutive 1-0 home overtime victories over Tampa Bay and Anaheim, and the Blackhawks produced only Patrick Kane's power-play goal on 46 shots while having a four-game win streak end with Thursday's 3-1 loss in Winnipeg.

The Blackhawks have gone 235:58 since Artem Anisimov recorded their last 5-on-5 goal 4:02 into a 3-2 victory over Florida on Oct. 22.

'At this point in time we can do things a little bit different to make it tougher on their goalie,' Kane said. 'Try to get to the net, stay at the net, get shots through, get rebounds and try to bang in goals that way. Get some dirty goals because it seems all the pretty plays are not really happening for us.'

Kane, whose five goals fueled the Blackhawks' four-game playoff sweep of Minnesota, has done his part by scoring three of his six goals and adding four assists over a five-game point streak. Jonathan Toews netted the game-winner in the recent overtime wins, his lone two goals this season.

Chicago, losers of three straight on the road, now brings its sputtering offense into XCel Energy Center, where Minnesota (6-2-1) has scored 13 goals in going 4-0-0 thus far. The Wild maintained their perfect home mark with Tuesday's 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Edmonton, surging ahead when Charlie Coyle scored 43 seconds after Ryan Suter recorded his second goal of the night midway through the third period.

Minnesota has played the Blackhawks tough in each of the past two regular seasons, having gone 5-4-1 over that span. The playoffs have been another matter, with Chicago winning eight of 10 matchups in eliminating the Wild in the conference semis in back-to-back years.

"It's always going to be a difficult game against them," Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk said. "It's exciting - obviously there's a rivalry there - but we just try to win games, and it's always going to be a tough one against Chicago."

Dubnyk sports a 1.66 goals-against average while winning three of his last four appearances but struggled in last year's playoff series between the teams, permitting three or more goals in three of the Wild's four losses.

Crawford owns a 1.21 GAA while starting Chicago's last five contests, but Scott Darling is expected to make his first start since allowing four goals on 24 shots in a loss at Washington on Oct. 15.

Darling, who has never faced Minnesota, had 28 saves in Chicago's 4-1 win over the New York Islanders in his Oct. 10 season debut.

    • Preview: Canadiens (9-2) at Flames (2-7)
      Date: October 30, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

The Montreal Canadiens were just 20 minutes from getting back in the win column on their road trip when their normally stellar defense faltered, sending them to their first losing streak of the season.

The Canadiens will get a quick opportunity to bounce back from their stunning defeat and try to avoid a winless trek through Western Canada on Friday night against the scuffling Calgary Flames.

Montreal took command early Thursday against Edmonton, scoring three times in the first 18 minutes, and carried a two-goal lead into the final period. The Canadiens and star goaltender Carey Price then proceeded to give up three goals in a span of 12:43 in a 4-3 loss.

Leon Draisaitl's second goal of the game with 1:02 remaining provided the winning margin for the Oilers.

"It shouldn't happen to good teams. We've got to make sure it doesn't happen again. There's not much to say other than that. We let our foot off the gas," captain Max Pacioretty said. "We have a game (Friday) where we've got to come back and prove this was a fluke and this is not our team."

In the opener to their three-game trip Tuesday, the Canadiens (9-2-0) were denied a chance to tie the best start in NHL history with a 5-1 drubbing to Vancouver. Price, who had a 1.29 goals-against average in his first seven starts, was also in net for that game.

Montreal, a winner in its first five road games, could give Mike Condon his third NHL start in this visit to the Flames (2-7-1). Calgary enters this game having lost three straight (0-2-1) and is 1-6-1 in its last eight.

Sam Bennett's first NHL goal with 7:28 left in regulation gave the Flames a point Wednesday against Ottawa, but they fell 5-4 in a shootout. Calgary was outscored a combined 8-1 in the first two games on its road trip.

The Flames also lost goaltender Jonas Hiller to a lower-body injury when he collided with Bobby Ryan in the third period, and Karri Ramo was recalled from AHL Stockton on Thursday, one week after he was placed on waivers.

"Injuries unfortunately are a part of our game, at any position," coach Bob Hartley said. "Obviously, it's been a rough start, but there's no quit in this organization. We're going to keep pushing."

The Canadiens split their two games with the Flames last season and won in a shootout in Calgary on Oct. 28 to end a string of seven consecutive defeats there. They lost 6-2 at home Nov. 2.

Josh Jooris scored a pair of goals in that victory for Calgary, but he has zero points in his first eight games this season. Mark Giordano had two goals and one assist in the two meetings, and fellow defenseman T.J. Brodie provided four assists.

Brodie returned from a broken bone in his hand Wednesday.

Lars Eller has five goals and two assists in nine career games against the Flames, but he has two points in his last nine overall contests. Pacioretty has three goals and three assists in his last six matchups.

      • Preview: Canucks (3-2) at Coyotes (5-4)
        Date: October 30, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

Getting Martin Hanzal back would give the Arizona Coyotes a lift offensively. It could also provide a spark for Max Domi.

With Hanzal among a trio potentially set to return from injury, the Coyotes attempt to bounce back from their worst loss of the season Friday night against the struggling Vancouver Canucks.

Hanzal is one of six players with a league-high 10 assists. The veteran center has been a major influence on Domi, Arizona's star rookie who has four goals and six assists.

With Hanzal sidelined with a lower-body injury, Domi was a minus-3 while the Coyotes (5-4-1) lost 6-0 at Boston to conclude a 2-2-1 road trip.

Arizona may have Hanzal back, but it's also awaiting word on center Antoine Vermette while defenseman Connor Murphy (both lower body) is expected to be back.

Vermette has been held without a point in seven games, while Murphy has two in nine.

"Murphy will play for sure," coach Dave Tippett told the team's official website. "Vermette and Hanzal we'll re-evaluate in the morning.

"It would be ideal to get them both back, but we'll see. Neither one we're going to put into trouble if we think there's a possibility of injuring things further, but if they can play they'll play and that would certainly help."

Production from Anthony Duclair would also be helpful. The 20-year-old left wing has a team-leading five goals, but none in the last four games.

The Coyotes fell 3-1 in the most recent home matchup with Vancouver on March 22, ending their four-game winning streak in the series there.

The Canucks (4-2-4) have dropped five of six (1-2-3) and they'd like to settle this matchup in regulation after blowing a two-goal, third-period lead to fall 4-3 in overtime at Dallas on Thursday.

Vancouver is 1-0-4 in games ending in overtime or shootouts after going 12-0-5 in such contests last season.

"We were good last year 4-on-4 and in shootout," coach Willie Desjardins said. "We won quite a few games that way. And that's been a big difference in the games this year."

Radim Vrbata is starting to get going, totaling three goals and one assist in the past four games. The right wing's 31 goals led the team last season while his 32 assists were a career high.

Vrbata, who had two stints with the Coyotes from 2007-14, had four points in five matchups last season with three coming in two at Arizona.

Jared McCann is looking to get back on the score sheet after being held without a point by the Stars. The center, the 24th overall pick in the 2014 draft, had two goals in a 5-1 win over Montreal two days earlier, giving him four on the season to put him in the thick of the rookie scoring race with Duclair, Domi and others.

McCann, though, is yet to score through three road games.

Daniel Sedin has six points in his last four matchups with Arizona, scoring a goal and assisting on another in a 5-0 home victory April 9. He enters this meeting with four points in four games after getting two assists Thursday.

        Sedin's eight points lead Vancouver.

        • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Oregon 61, Arizona State 55 OT- Wild game ended at 2:40 ET. ASU gained 741 yards, had 37 first downs....and lost.

          -- TCU 40, West Virginia 10-- Mountaineers are 0-4 in Big X.

-- North Carolina 26, Pitt 19-- Tar Heels won seven in row after losing opener.

-- Hawks 112, Knicks 101-- Back to reality; Atlanta was 10-24 from arc.

-- Clippers 104, Mavericks 88-- Rough night for Mark Cuban-- DeAndre Jordan had 15 rebounds, four blocks against team he almost signed with.

-- Patriots 36, Dolphins 7-- Pats converted 3rd-and-16 on first drive; it ended there.

          **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

          13) NBA is trying to have teams play less back/back nights; LY, teams averaged 19.3 back/backs. This year, it is 17.8 and no team has more than 20.

          12) I'd love to know what a President feels like the day after his term in office ends; imagine spending eight years in the most consuming job ever, where you can't drive a car and your assets are frozen and then one day it ends.. What do you do?

          11) Central Michigan's basketball team is pretty good; how do I know? They had a hard time scheduling games-- when they called teams to fill out five slots in this year's schedule, BYU was the only team that would play the Chippewas, so they're going to play four non-D-I games, which huts their strength of schedule-- too bad.

          10) ESPN's Magazine had a story on LSU's Leonard Fournette, how he gets a police escort back to his dorm after home games, from a state trooper who played for LSU 20+ years ago and whose day job is security for Governor Bobby Jindal. Without the police escort, the kid whould get beseiged by autograph seekers and it might take him hours to get away fron the stadium.

          9) Dallas Mavericks lost to the Clippers last night and don't play again until Sunday night against the Lakers; they're staying in LA all weekend.

          8) Baseball happenings: San Diego Padres named Arizona 3B coach Andy Green their new manager; Washington named former Padres' manager Bud Black their new skipper, Arizona named former Angel pitching coach Mike Butcher their new PC. .

          7) San Diego State's basketball team has a new $15M practice facility, where kids can go 24/7 to work on their games. I was a basketball manager in college, but at a D-III school; can't imagine getting a call to go rebound for someone who wants to shoot at midnight, but it happens at the D-I level.

          6) How is Tom Thibodeau not doing NBA games on TV? Guy is a basketball lifer, he was 417-283 coaching the Bulls-- we could learn a lot from him about basketball, plus I'm very curious if he has a TV personality. His in-game interviews were epic for being boring, but his taped tribute to the late Jerry Tarkanian this year was excellent.

          5) Walgreen's drug stores bought out Rite-Aid this week for $9.4B; we have lot of drug stores around here. Must have lot of sick people.

          4) Last March/April in college hoop, ACC teams were 19-7 in all postseason games, Pac-12 teams were 15-6, MVC teams 14-3. Loyola/Evansville both won a consolation tournament, pumping up the Valley's record.

          3) Jets cut punter Steve Weatherford after one game; he nets $51K for punting four times and holding for five kicks. Good work if you can get it.

          2) Analytics people in sports like to evaluate players using one number; I'm sure how they get to this number is well thought out but in my humble opinion, it is impossible to accurately evaluate a human being's performance with one number-- there are just so many intangibles that can't be measured accurately.

It is what makes sports so interesting; Raiders/Giants cut James Jones but with Green Bay (and Aaron Rodgers) he might make the Pro Bowl. Measure that.

          1) Best wishes to Minnesota football coach Jerry Kill, who retired this week for health reasons (he has epilepsy). Coach Kill revived the Gophers' program, setting up his successor to be a contender in the Big 14.

Over bettors feasting on Bruins games

Betting the Over in Boston Bruins games has been one of, if not the, hottest wagers out of the gate in the NHL season.

The Over has gone 8-0 through the first eight games on the Bruins' schedule and they'll visit the Florida Panthers Friday evening in their ninth game of the campaign.

The Bruins allowed 16 goals in their first three games of the season but have somewhat rectified their defensive shortcomings of late, including a shutout versus the Arizona Coyotes their last time out. In recent games, Boston has shown no trouble filling the net as they've tallied 26 goals over the course of their last five games.

Books have a total of 5.5 on the board for Friday's meeting in Florida.

Under bets keep cashing in Blackhawks games

Another game, another scoreline that resulted in cashed under bets in Chicago Blackhawks games. The defending Stanley Cup champions were defeated 3-1 by the Winnipeg Jets Thursday evening, moving their Over/Under record to 0-8 in their opening 10 games.

Chicago has tallied just 20 goals through those 10 games, but has allowed a paltry 19. More specifically, over their previous three games, the Hawks have managed just three goals.

The Blackhawks are right back at it with a visit to the Minnesota Wild Friday evening. Oddsmakers have a total of 5 on the board for this game.
