          Sunday, March 15

Panthers' G Roberto Luongo, questionable Sunday

Luongo has missed the last four games with a shoulder injury and will not return Sunday against the Rangers.

NHL roundup: Bruins win fifth straight

PITTSBURGH -- With the crowd clad in green and both teams donning black and gold, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins met for the third and final time this season on Saturday.

Each of the previous eight games between the teams was decided by one goal and this contest was another tight one, with Boston defeating Pittsburgh 2-0.

It was Boston's fifth consecutive win. Pittsburgh had won eight consecutive afternoon games against Boston. The win gives the Bruins at least one point in eight straight and puts them seven points ahead of the idle Ottawa Senators for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

In a bizarre start to the game, Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby was a late scratch after taking warm-ups. Then, less than two minutes into the game, center Evgeni Malkin took a hard hit from Boston center Chris Kelly and stayed down on the ice with an apparent lower-body injury. He got up and skated off to the Pittsburgh locker room where he stayed for several minutes, but then came back out late in the first period and took a few more shifts. However, he did not return for the start of the second period.

There was no immediate update given by the Penguins on either player.

          Blackhawks 6, Sharks 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Third-period goals from Brandon Saad and Bryan Bickell snapped a 2-2 tie and Chicago added two other scores to notch a win over desperate San Jose in front of a sell-out crowd at SAP Center.

San Jose's dwindling playoff hopes took a hit as the Sharks head out for a pivotal seven-game road trip where they'll have to try to find a way to pass at least two teams in the Western Conference to qualify for the playoffs for an 11th straight season.

Less than two minutes elapsed in the period when Blackhawks left winger Saad took advantage of an error from Sharks rookie defenseman Mirco Mueller to score his 21st goal at 1:21 of the third. Bickell, a left winger, scored his 12th at 4:56 on a feed from center Brad Richards, as San Jose's skaters got caught staring at the puck.

Chicago right wing Patrick Sharp scored his second of game and 12th of the season on the power play at 15:10 and right wing Marian Hossa filled an empty net at 17:44.

          Flyers 7, Red Wings 2

PHILADELPHIA -- Six Flyers scored, including center Brayden Schenn, who notched two, leading Philadelphia to a rout of Detroit.

Flyers goaltender Steve Mason made 31 saves.

Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard made 29 saves, with left winger Justin Abdelkader and left winger Erik Cole each tallying their 19th goals of the season.

The loss was the Red Wings' fourth in their last five games.

          Panthers 2, Hurricanes 0

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Center Brandon Pirri's second-period goal held up and third-string goalie Dan Ellis stopped 27 shots for his 15th career shutout as Florida claimed a shutout victory over Carolina.

Ellis, playing for his sixth NHL team since being drafted in 2000, improved to 3-0-1 after being recalled from the minors in relief of injured goalies Roberto Luongo and Al Montoya.

The Panthers (31-23-14) stayed six points out of the Eastern Conference playoffs with 14 games remaining, trailing Washington and Boston for the final two wild-card positions.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes (25-34-8) closed out their five-game homestand 1-3-1 and were shut out for the sixth time this season.

          Rangers 2, Sabres 0

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Goalie Mackenzie Skapski made 20 saves to lead New York to a shutout victory over Buffalo. It was Skapski's first career shutout in his second NHL game.

Defenseman Keith Yandle and right winger Martin St. Louis scored for New York (43-17-7).

Goalie Anders Lindback was strong between the pipes for Buffalo (19-43-6) and made 31 saves in his 100th career game.

Yandle's winning goal came with 12:29 left on a long shot from the point that made its way through traffic in front of the net to give the defenseman his first goal as a Ranger. He was traded from Arizona to New York on March 1.

The Rangers ended a season-long five-game trip with a 4-0-1 record and have won 13 of their last 16 games. They have also won their last seven games against Buffalo.

          Canucks 4, Maple Leafs 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Right winger Derek Dorsett scored a goal and added two assists as Vancouver continued its home-ice dominance of Toronto.

Left winger Chris Higgins and right winger Jannik Hansen also scored for the Canucks, who haven't lost against Toronto at Rogers Arena since November 2003. Center Shawn Matthias scored into an empty-net goal late in the third period.

Dorsett's three points give him a career-high 22 on the season.

Right winger Phil Kessel scored Toronto's goal on a penalty shot at 12:38 of the third period.

          Jets 2, Lightning 1

TAMPA, Fla. -- A five-minute boarding penalty and a costly turnover helped road-tough Winnipeg rally from a goal down in the third period, surprising division-leading Tampa Bay with a win.

Winnipeg (34-23-12) took the lead with 7:16 left in the game, capitalizing on a turnover by Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman deep in his zone during 4-on-4 play.

Right winger Blake Wheeler stole the puck from Hedman, skated around defenseman Anton Stralman and found the far end of the net to beat goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy for his 20th goal and the lead. Tampa Bay (42-21-7) had lost only six games at home all season.

The game pivoted with 11:59 left in the third on a hit that Lightning right winger Nikita Kucherov made close to the boards on Jets defenseman Toby Enstrom, which resulted in a five-minute boarding penalty and a game misconduct, giving the Winnipeg power play a sustained chance to tie the game.

          Canadiens 3, Islanders 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Montreal put a halt to its recent skid in which it had lost four of its last five games by defeating New York.

Now with 93 points, the Canadiens sit alone atop the Atlantic Division.

With the loss, the Islanders have now dropped three straight home games for the first time this season. They have lost four of their last five games as well and drop three points behind the New York Rangers for first place in the Metropolitan Division.

One of the strongest offensive teams in the league, the Islanders have scored just three goals in their past three games. Running into a red-hot Carey Price certainly did not help. Price was a stalwart, repelling 35 shots in his league-leading 38th victory of the season.

          Wild 3, Blues 1

ST. LOUIS -- In a potential Central Division playoff preview, Minnesota scored twice in 17 seconds with a little more than six minutes to play en route to a victory over St. Louis at Scottrade Center.

Right winger Nino Niederreiter and center Kyle Brodziak scored the decisive goals in short fashion as the Wild took control of what had been a 1-1 game.

First, Niederreiter broke the tie by putting away the puck at 13:27 after it slithered through Blues goalie Brian Elliott on center Mikko Koivu’s shot. Then, at 13:44, Brodziak beat Elliott on a point-blank backhand after right winger Vladimir Tarasenko’s turnover.

The Blues got on the board first at 4:57 of the second period when center David Backes deflected a point shot by left winger Alex Steen between goaltender Devan Dubnyk's legs. Center Paul Stastny also assisted.

          Devils 4, Coyotes 1

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- New Jersey goaltender Cory Schneider is quietly having a great season on a team destined for the NHL Draft lottery. When it comes to games against Arizona, however, Schneider is having a great career.

Schneider entered Saturday night's game at Gila River Arena with a 4-1-1 record, a 0.82 goals-against average and a .970 save percentage in six career starts against the Coyotes. That dominance continued as he stopped 30 shots in the Devils' 4-1 win.

In two games against the Coyotes this season, Schneider has stopped 68 of 69 shots.

New Jersey left winger Adam Henrique opened the scoring when he batted a puck out of midair and past Coyotes goalie Mike Smith on a power play with 1:57 left in the second period. Travis Zajac, who playing defense on the power play, blasted a shot high over the net that struck the glass and ricocheted to Henrique, who was parked at the left post.

It was the Devils' fifth power play goal in their last eight games and the 15th goal of the season for Henrique.

          Predators 2, Kings 1

LOS ANGELES -- Left winger Viktor Stalberg scored the go-ahead goal in the third period, rallying Nashville to a victory over Los Angeles at Staples Center.

Goaltender Pekka Rinne recorded 23 saves for his 200th career win, leading the Predators (43-20-7) to only their second win in the last nine games.

Goalie Jonathan Quick stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced, but the Kings (33-22-13) had their two-game winning streak snapped.

The Predators scored twice within a 66-second span to prevail. They grabbed the lead when Stalberg slapped a wrist shot that deflected off the stick of Kings defenseman Jake Muzzin and fluttered past Quick at 7:43 of the third. It was Stalberg's first goal this season.

          Avalanche 3, Flames 2

DENVER -- Left winger Alex Tanguay had a goal and an assist, goaltender Semyon Varlamov made 29 saves and Colorado beat Calgary.

Centers Ryan O’Reilly and John Mitchell also had goals and defenseman Tyson Barrie had two assists for the Avalanche, which picked up two important points.

Right winger David Jones and center Lance Bouma had a goal and an assist each for the Flames, who lost in regulation for the first time in March.

Goalie Karri Ramo stopped 23 shots and center Mikael Backlund had two assists for the Flames.

The chaotic playoff race in the Western Conference remains tight. Vancouver jumped Calgary into second in the Pacific Division while Los Angeles’ loss to Nashville cost it a chance to also move ahead of the Flames. Calgary, with 81 points, is one ahead of the Winnipeg, which is in the second wild-card slot after beating Tampa Bay on Saturday night.

                      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Heat 106, Cavaliers 92-- Four teams are tied for last two playoff spots in East.

-- Celtics 108, 76ers 89-- Boston won nine of its last 12 games.

-- NJIT 84, New Hempshire 77-- America East won't take NJIT as a member.

-- Why wouldn't Jameis Winston go to the NFL Draft? He is an unusual guy.

-- Pete Rose applied for reinstatement to baseball; come on Commish, let him back in. Think of the positive press it'll generate and it'll help Cooperstown.

-- Georgia Tech, UNLV decided to keep their hoop coaches for next year, which is a nice way of saying they didn't want to write big checks to buy them out.

                      **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

                      13) Kevin Pillar is an outfielder for Blue Jays; he is out for 7-10 days after pulling an oblique muscle.........while sneezing. I kid you not.

                      12) Colorado is still playing basketball, they're in the CBI but their best player Askia Booker decided to call it a season and won't play. Not sure if Spencer Dinwiddie's injury last year had any impact on this decision- that cost Dinwiddie a lot of money when the draft came around, but how do you walk out on your teammates?

                      11) Oliver Purnell is out after five years coaching DePaul; why can't anyone win with the Blue Demons? They've had the same AD for over a decade; maybe that is the problem. Team in Chicago shouldn't have problems recrutiing good players.

                      10) Enjoyed watching Cal-Irvine players/coaches celebrating late Saturday night when they won their first Big West title. Lot of times coaches act so cool and unemotional when they win. Too bad; its a great moment in their life-- show some emotion!!!

                      9) Surprising fact: Duke hasn't won any of the last four ACC tournaments.

                      8) Cardinal catcher Yadier Molina has lost 25-30 pounds and looks a lot different.

                      7) Kids should watch Notre Dame play offense and Hawai'i play defense. Rainbows really get after it on defense; its good to see.

                      6) Eastern Washington guard Tyler Harvey leads the country is scoring; his dad is a D-I ref, working WCC and Big Sky games. Harvey and his friends play Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA tournament this week.

                      5) David Wright's last home run was July 11. Hard to believe. Michael Cuddyer is on the Mets because he is Wright's friend. Wright chose Cuddyer over Giancarlo Stanton for Home Run Derby couple years ago-- brilliant decision.

                      4) Catchers must hate spring training; too many pitchers to warm up.

                      3) RIP Eugene Patton, 82, better known as Gene Gene the Dancing Machine on one of the great TV shows of all-time, the Gong Show. Mr Patton was an NBC stagehand who became slightly famous for his cameo spots dancing as the show went into commercial breaks. If you've never seen the Gong Show, find it on the Internet; great stuff.

                      2) Watched Good Will Hunting again the other night; still sad to realize that as much joy as Robin Williams brought to other people's lives, he couldn't be happy himself.

                      1) 45 minutes before brackets are announced Sunday, Alabama announced it fired coach Anthony Grant; 15 minutes later, Charlotte announces it fired Alan Major. Now burying bad news under bigger headlines has become an art form. If Pete Rose ever gets put in the Hall of Fame, there will be a lot of headline burying going on that day.

The Lightning have won all four meetings with the Canadiens this season, a stark contrast to last year, when Montreal eliminated the Lightning with a 4-0 sweep in the opening round of the playoffs.

                            Capitals 4, Sabres 3 (SO)

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Center Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the lone goal in the shootout, leading Washington past Buffalo.

Kuznetsov, left winger Curtis Glencross and defenseman Mike Green scored in regulation for the Capitals. Goalie Braden Holtby made 30 saves.

Left winger Johan Larsson, center Cody Hodgson and center Tyler Ennis scored for the Sabres, who lost for the seventh game in a row. Goalie Anders Lindback made 34 saves.

                            Kings 1, Coyotes 0

LOS ANGELES -- Rookie center Andy Andreoff scored his first career goal, and goaltender Jonathan Quick earned his sixth shutout of the season, lifting Los Angeles to a shutout victory over Arizona before an announced crowd of 18,230 at Staples Center.

Andreoff scored with 1:05 remaining in the second period on an assist by center Jordan Nolan and defenseman Brayden McNabb. Andreoff, who was playing in place of injured center Jarret Stoll, fielded a pass from Nolan and squeezed a winner past Smith. It took Andreoff, a third-round pick (80th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, 15 games to produce his first goal.

Quick stopped all 25 shots he faced for the 37th shutout of his career, which is the most in Kings history.

The win allowed the Kings (34-22-13), who won for the third time in four games, to tie the third-place Calgary Flames with 81 points in the Pacific Division. They are one point back of the second-place Vancouver Canucks.

                            Oilers 4, Maple Leafs 1

EDMONTON, Alberta -- One good beating deserves another.

And with that, Edmonton avenged last month's blowout loss to Toronto by pounding the Maple Leafs 4-1 in the rematch at Rexall Place.

Edmonton had it wrapped up in the first 11 minutes, rolling out to a 4-0 lead en route to handing the Leafs a 20th loss in their past 21 road games.

The Oilers (19-39-12) wasted no time in jumping on the Leafs, as left winger Benoit Pouliot scored on Edmonton's first shot of the game just 53 seconds after the opening faceoff.

It was the league-leading 10th time this season that the Leafs gave up a goal on the first shot of the game.
