Plenty of goals leads to a night of overs

Teams scored 50 goals in eight games last night, leading to the over going 5-1-2 in NHL action Tuesday night.

The good over night bucks the recent trend as the under had been hot going 16-26 over/under in the past seven days.

Islanders go under for sixth straight game

The New York Islanders went under the total for the sixth consecutive game in their 2-1 shootout loss to the Minnesota Wild Tuesday night.

During the streak the Isles have scored just 1.3 goals per game, while giving up just 2.2 goals per game in the process.

The Islanders, now 34-39-1 over/under in this season, try to make it seven in a row when they host the Los Angeles Kings Thursday.

Preview: Blackhawks (44-22) at Flyers (29-29)

        Date: March 25, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

Kimmo Timonen watched Chicago clinch the 2010 Stanley Cup with its only victory at Philadelphia in almost two decades.

Hoping to finally hoist the Cup as a member of the Blackhawks, the 40-year-old defenseman returns Wednesday night to face a Flyers team that enabled him to chase that elusive dream.

Timonen spent seven seasons with Philadelphia, and was on the ice five years ago when Patrick Kane scored in overtime to give Chicago its first Cup since 1961 with a 4-3 victory in Game 6.

That remains the Blackhawks' only win in their last 13 regular-season or playoff games at Philadelphia. After the Flyers traded Timonen on Feb. 27, he makes his initial return looking to help Chicago (44-22-6) end an 0-9-1 regular-season skid at Philadelphia that dates to a 4-1 victory Nov. 9, 1996.

While it's likely to be an emotional night for the 16-year veteran, it's another on his journey to finally raise the Cup before retiring at season's end.

"If I'd won the Stanley Cup before I probably wouldn't be (in Chicago)," Timonen told the Blackhawks' official website. "So that is the driving factor here. That's why I'm here."

Sidelined because of blood clots discovered in his leg and lungs last summer, Timonen still expected to make his 2014-15 debut with the Flyers (29-29-16). But as their playoff chances dwindled, he talked with general manager Ron Hextall about a trade.

"If we're out of the playoffs, I asked Kimmo if he wanted to look at going somewhere and taking a run at winning a Stanley Cup," Hextall said.

"If Kimmo wouldn't have been amicable to being traded, we would not have traded him. He's meant too much to this organization to trade him if it was against his wishes."

Advertising Timonen's return on their website, the Flyers likely will pay tribute to the man who ranks third among active NHL defensemen with 571 points.

"Kimmo's definitely one of the really good guys in the game," Philadelphia goaltender Steve Mason said.

Though Timonen doesn't have a point and is a minus-2 while averaging 12:27 minutes in nine games with his new team, Chicago has allowed 13 goals to go 7-1-1 in those contests.

The Blackhawks rebounded from Saturday's 4-0 loss at Dallas by winning 3-1 at Carolina on Monday. Andrew Shaw scored twice and Corey Crawford made 43 saves to help Chicago win for the ninth time in 12 games .

"We'll do what we have to do to win those tight games," said captain Jonathan Toews, who recorded his 500th point with an assist on Shaw's empty-netter. "We know we could have played better, done some little things better but the main thing is to build off (it)."

Ex-Flyer Patrick Sharp added a goal and an assist.

With two assists during a 4-0 victory over Philadelphia on Oct. 21, Sharp has six and a goal during a four-game point streak against his former club.

The Flyers return from an 0-2-2 trip through Canada where they matched a club record with a ninth straight road defeat, 5-4 in overtime at Edmonton on Saturday.

"It's frustrating and disappointing," said forward Claude Giroux, who scored twice.

Philadelphia is 9-20-10 on the road but 20-9-6 at home, where it's 5-1-1 since dropping three straight to open February.

Giroux has three goals in two games after going 10 straight without one. He has one in his last 13 home contests but three scores with six assists in his last six regular-season and playoff meetings there versus Chicago.

Preview: Avalanche (33-27) at Oilers (20-40)

          Date: March 25, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

A longshot to move into playoff position, the Colorado Avalanche are doing their best to remain hopeful.

Looking to avoid a third straight defeat, the visiting Avalanche try to get back on track Wednesday night against the lowly Edmonton Oilers.

Colorado (33-27-12) won six of seven after opening a five-game trip with Thursday's 5-2 victory at Arizona, then suffered consecutive 3-2 losses to Anaheim in overtime and at Calgary in regulation Monday. Sitting 11th in the Western Conference with 10 games remaining, the Avs have essentially no room for error while trying to keep their fading postseason hopes alive.

"We're probably going to need to win out or something like that in order to get ourselves in the playoffs," forward Alex Tanguay told the Avalanche's official website after reaching the 20-goal mark for the seventh time Monday.

While that's certainly a tall order, Colorado isn't ready to give up on the season.

'I will never say never,' coach Patrick Roy said. 'This is a team that I'm proud of. When you're wearing the Avalanche logo, you battle. ... Every time you're going to be on the ice, you're going to compete.'

While the effort remains there, the Avs need to start better after allowing the first goal in each game on the trip.

Though opponents have failed on all 16 power-play chances in the Avs' last eight road contests - their longest such stretch in 27 years - and they've killed 31 of 32 penalties over the last 14 games overall, they are 1 for 13 with the man advantage in the last six.

"We're going to keep playing hockey and we're going to keep doing our best to win hockey games," said forward Gabriel Landeskog, who has two goals with two assists on the trip.

Semyon Varlamov made 27 saves and Tanguay and Matt Duchene each scored in the shootout as the Avs won their third straight over the Oilers (20-40-13), 2-1 at home Jan. 2. Colorado snapped a three-game skid at Edmonton with a 4-1 victory April 8.

Though Varlamov has posted a 1.44 goals-against average while winning his last two against the Oilers, those both came at home. He's yielded 13 goals in two straight at Edmonton and has a 5.42 GAA during a three-game skid there.

The Oilers' 2-0-2 stretch ended with a 4-1 home loss to Winnipeg on Monday.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored for Edmonton, which recorded at least four goals five times in the previous seven contests. Losers in 11 of 14, the Oilers have given up an average of 4.3 goals and allowed opponents to go 10 of 29 on the power play in the last eight games

Losing defenseman Andrew Ference to an upper-body injury and key defensive forward Boyd Gordon to a back problem in the first period didn't help Edmonton, which allowed the Jets to score twice with the man advantage.

"We need to be a little bit better in that area," forward Matt Hendricks said.

Nugent-Hopkins has recorded four of his career-high 23 goals in the last three games to go with seven assists during a career-high tying six-game point streak. He had four goals with two assists during a five-game point streak against the Avs before being blanked in his last two meetings.

Preview: Stars (35-28) at Flames (40-27)

            Date: March 25, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

The Calgary Flames and Dallas Stars have identical winning percentages this month to rank among the NHL's best.

Only one of them is in position to make the playoffs.

The Flames look to continue their postseason push Wednesday night at home against a surging Stars team that is increasingly desperate.

Calgary is 7-2-2 in March while Dallas is 8-3-0 for winning percentages of .727.

The Flames (40-27-6) are trying to hold off Los Angeles for the Pacific Division's third automatic spot as they look to cap this five-game homestand at 3-1-1.

Dallas (35-28-10) is opening a three-game Western Canada trip after sweeping a three-game homestand with Monday's 4-3 victory over Buffalo. The Stars, winners of eight of 10, seek to catch Minnesota or Winnipeg for one of the Western Conference's final wild-card spots.

"The only thing we can do is win out, try to win out," coach Lindy Ruff said. "Take it a game at a time but try to win out."

Dallas trailed entering the third period against the league's worst team before Jamie Benn had a goal and an assist over the final 20 minutes.

Benn, who scored in the first period and has six points in his past three games, suffered an undisclosed injury late in the game and did not practice Tuesday.

"Jamie is a little bit of a concern," Ruff told the Stars' official website. "He was hurting late in the game and he was sore today. We'll see. He is a question mark for tomorrow."

Stars center Tyler Seguin has 10 points in six games against the Flames, with his teams going 5-0-1. His 33 goals are four shy of last season's career high.

He's part of an offense that leads the West with 3.08 goals per game.

The Flames, meanwhile, are averaging an NHL-best 3.45 goals this month. Jiri Hudler has a league-high 17 points in March while linemates Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan are among the leaders with 13.

"That first line has had a heavy load all season and they've been great for us," winger David Jones said.

Gaudreau is in a tight race with Nashville's Filip Forsberg for the lead among rookies with 57 points.

Calgary relied on its third line of Jones, Lance Bouma and Markus Granlund to key Monday's 3-2 victory over Colorado. Those skaters combined for five points, with Jones and Bouma each registering a goal and an assist.

"They always play the same way," coach Bob Hartley said. "That's the good thing about Lance Bouma, Jonesie. You can always count on them. They go hard, they're not fun to play against."

The Flames average a West-leading 18.78 blocked shots, and finished with 24 in a 2-1 home defeat to Dallas in the only 2014-15 meeting Dec. 19.

Benn had a goal and an assist that night while Kari Lehtonen made 21 saves to improve to 7-1-0 with a 2.22 goals-against average in his last eight starts against the Flames. Lehtonen is 6-1-0 with a 1.72 GAA in his last seven starts.

Karri Ramo has started the last three Calgary games. His lone one versus Dallas came last season.

Stars defenseman Trevor Daley has missed the last nine games with a knee injury and could return on this trip.

                      NHL roundup: Flyers blitz Blackhawks

PHILADELPHIA -- Right winger Wayne Simmonds scored the 100th goal of his Flyers career, helping lead Philadelphia to a 4-1 win over the visiting Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday.

Centers Ryan White and Claude Giroux and left winger Michael Raffl also scored for Philadelphia, while goaltender Steve Mason stopped 34 of 35 shots in the victory. Philadelphia right winger Matt Read and defenseman Michael Del Zotto added two assists apiece.

Goaltender Corey Crawford stopped 29 of 33 shots for Chicago and center Andrew Shaw notched his 13th goal of the season for the Blackhawks' only score.

                      Oilers 4, Avalanche 3

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Colorado fought back valiantly from a 3-0 first-period deficit, tying it 3-3 in the third, but Edmonton center Derek Roy scored the winner on a power play at 10:42 of the third period.

The Oilers jumped on top on goals from defenseman Martin Marincin at 4:33, right winger Jordan Eberle at 5:53 and left winger Taylor Hall at 9:36. That spelled the end of Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov, who got the hook after giving up three goals on seven shots.

Right winger Jarome Iginla and left winger Alex Tanguay scored for the Avalanche in the second period, and center Ryan O'Reilly tied the game at 4:54 of the third.

                      Stars 4, Flames 3 (SO)

CALGARY, Alberta -- Center Tyler Seguin scored the lone goal in the shootout to keep Dallas with at least some hope of catching a wild-card spot. The Stars earned their fourth win in a row and netted their ninth victory in 11 games.

With the extra-time loss, the Flames maintained their hold on third place in the Pacific Division, one point ahead of the hard-charging Los Angeles Kings.

The Flames rebounded from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits to earn the point. Calgary defenseman Deryk Engelland -- who snapped a 77-game goal drought -- potted his second of the game midway through the third period to force overtime. Dallas right winger Ales Hemsky scored twice.

The Buffalo Sabres will be turning to Matt Hackett in nets when they host the Arizona Coyotes Thursday. Hackett has only played in three games for the Sabres this season, all coming after the team traded away goalies Michal Neuvirth and Jhonas Enroth.

Hackett is winless in his three starts while posting a 4.33 goals against average and a .893 save percentage. In all three of Hackett's starts this season, the Sabres have lost by more than three goals.

Buffalo is currently +103 against visiting Arizona (-114) Thursday.

Tokarski to start in nets for Canadiens Thursday

The Montreal Canadiens will turn to backup goalie Dustin Tokarski in nets when they visit Winnipeg Thursday. The Habs have dropped four of Tokarski's past five starts, but have only once lost by more than one goal.

Tokarski has a 6-5-3 record on the season with a 2.66 goals against average and a .917 save percentage.

Jets' D Dustin Byfuglien, doubtful Thursday

Byfuglien is out with an upper-body injury and is not expected to return for Thursday's game against the Canadiens.

Predators' LW James Neal, out Thursday

Neal has missed the last five games with an upper-body injury and will not return for Thursday's game against the Lightning.

Game of the Day: Ducks at Bruins
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anaheim Ducks vs. Boston Bruins (-120, 5)

The Boston Bruins are mired in a five-game losing streak that has left them on the outside of the playoff picture and face a stern test when they host the Pacific Division-leading Anaheim Ducks on Thursday. The Bruins are one point behind Ottawa for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference, with the Senators holding a game in hand. "The next nine games is what’s going to decide whether we want to make a run for it, and be there," coach Claude Julien said. "It’s in our hands.”

While Boston is hoping to extend its run of seven consecutive postseason appearances, Anaheim is locked in a battle for the Presidents' Trophy and the top seed in the Western Conference. The Ducks squadered a chance to create some separation by dropping the first two contests of their five-game road trip, including a 5-3 setback at Columbus on Tuesday in which they blew an early two-goal lead. Anaheim has won five of the past seven meetings, including a 3-2 victory at home on Dec. 1.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NHL Network, TVA, Prime Ticket (Anaheim), NESN (Boston)

LINE HISTORY: Most books opened the Bruins between -115 and -120 with a total of 5.

INJURY REPORT: Ducks - D Korbinian Holzer (Ques-Concussion), RW Tim Jackman (Out-Lower Body) Bruins - C David Krejci (Ques-Knee), D Dougie Hamilton (Out-Upper Body)

ABOUT THE DUCKS (46-22-7 SU, 33-38-4 O/U): Captain Ryan Getzlaf made no effort to hide his displeasure at Anaheim's play following Tuesday's setback, which came two days after the Ducks suffered a 7-2 beat-down at the hands of the New York Rangers. “What we’re doing and the way we’re playing right now is not acceptable,” Getzlaf said. “We’re going to change that. Internally. Within our locker room, we’re going to change it. ... We're pretending." Anaheim's propensity to surrender goals in the second period is alarming, yielding three more Tuesday to boost its total to a league-worst 92.

ABOUT THE BRUINS (36-25-12 SU, 28-32-13 O/U): Tuukka Rask allowed two goals or fewer eight times in a nine-start span, but the reigning Vezina Trophy winner has had a pair of rocky performances in his last three outings, allowing five goals to Ottawa and getting yanked after surrendering four in Sunday's loss at Tampa Bay. "When we don't have everybody going, then it affects everybody," Rask said. "It's got to be mental. Everybody's in the same boat physically." David Krejci, sidelined for the past 15 games with a partially torn ligament in his left knee, could be back Thursday.

                            TRENDS:

*Bruins are 0-5 in their last 5 overall.
*Under is 6-0 in Ducks last 6 vs. a team with a losing record.
*Home team is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.
*Over is 7-1-1 in Bruins last 9 vs. Western Conference.

CONSENSUS: 52 percent of users are backing the Bruins.

                            • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Watched the two CBS games on airplane coming home; technology is amazing.

-- I don't watch pregame/halftime shows very much, but friend of mine who knows stuff can't stand Kenny Smith on college games, says he doesn't add anything at all.

-- Jets' owner Woody Johnson sold his co-op apartment in New York for $77.5M.

-- Odd stat of NCAA tournament: Duke beat San Diego State easily last Sunday, but for whole game, they were 2-2 on foul line. Since when does that happen?

-- Dean Smith left every guy who played for him $200 each in his will.

-- Sean Miller is a terrific coach but is 0-3 in regional finals; he is a 1.5-point favorite Saturday against Wisconsin team that beat Arizona in this round last year.

                              **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I think about on a 5-hour flight........

                              13) Notre Dame 81, Wichita State 70-- Fighting Irish pass the ball, they shoot the ball, are great fun to watch. They'll give Kentucky a ballgame because of it, but it'll take a near-perfect performance to post an upset.

                              12) Wisconsin 79, North Carolina 72-- Tar Heels shot 8-13 from arc and still lost; Badgers got nine minutes off bench from PG Traevon Jackson; Gasser played 40:00, Kaminsky played 39:00. Badger bench played total of only 31 minutes.

                              11) Arizona 68, Xavier 60-- Game was tied at half, but Musketeers were 3-17 on arc, which isn't good enough to post an upset. Underdogs were 2-2 vs spread last night, are now 25-11 in this round the last 4.5 years. Its a sad commentary on our world today that Sean Miller will take some heat if Arizona loses to Wisconsin Saturday, since he is 0-3 in regional final games.

                              10) Kentucky 78, West Virginia 39-- Al McGuire once said, "The best thing about freshmen is they become sophomores", which I'm guessing is what Bob Huggins is thinking about freshman Daxter Miles' trash talk about Kentucky before this game, which might've been the worst game I saw all season.

                              9) West Virginia isn't good enough to beat Kentucky no matter what, but no one pays to watch referees blow the whistle; I can't remember a game where there were two fouls in the first 0:15- Devin Williams had two fouls in the first 1:14 and left with the score 0-0-- it was 18-2 within a flash after that.

                              8) Post-game press conferences are high comedy, when players are always referred to as "the student-athletes". Xavier's press conference took place around 1am ET on a Friday morning, about seven hours before classes begin on Xavier's campus in Ohio. Xavier's players are in Los Angeles. Just call them what they are, players. Some are good students, some are not.

                              7) If Texas is thinking about firing Rick Barnes, who exactly are they going to bring in who is better? He's been in 13 of last 14 NCAA tournaments, but hasn't been higher than a 7-seed since 2011- he is 35-37 in Big X the last four years, but I'll ask another question-- if you fire a guy with Barnes' overall record, is this really a good job? Not all changes result in improvements.

                              6) Correction: New Nevada coach Eric Musselman didn't work for Trent Johnson at LSU, he worked for Johnny Jones, who succeeded Johnson in Baton Rouge.

                              5) Bad night for Wichita State last night, and now it could get worse, as Alabama is going to throw $3M a year at Gregg Marshall and if he says no, there's a chance Texas could do the same thing. And for you cocky Kentucky fans out in Las Vegas? The day is coming when Calipari is going to go back to the NBA-- what you going to do then??

                              4) Victor Martinez homered Thursday, good news for my fantasy baseball team; he isn't and probably won't be catcher-eligible, but I still need his bat at DH.

                              3) Why would a business refuse service to anyone based on their sexual orientation? Indiana passed a weird and dangerous law this week-- everyone's money is worth the same amount, why should it be legal for a business to exclude gay people-- how would you know who is and who isn't? I'll say this; it sets a dangerous precedent.

                              2) Hardest part of vacation was dragging my butt out of bed a couple days at 10am to go down to the sportsbook and watch exhibition baseball games. My sleep clock gets all kinds of messed up on my trips to the desert.

                              1) You know it was a great vacation when it feels like you've been gone for a month when you get back and its only been ten days.
