Preview: Canadiens (8-4) at Sabres (3-9)

    Date: November 05, 2014 7:30 PM EDT

The Buffalo Sabres produced just three win streaks last season en route to finishing with the fewest points in the league.

They have a chance to register their first this season if they can take advantage of slumping Montreal but will have to snap a five-game skid to the Canadiens on Wednesday night.

Buffalo registered its first set of back-to-back victories in 2013-14 from Nov. 12-15 and had a season-high three consecutive wins Feb. 25-28 before losing 19 of its final 22.

The Sabres (3-9-1) once again have the fewest points in the NHL but rebounded from a 5-0 drubbing in Pittsburgh on Saturday with a 3-2 shootout win against Detroit the next day, snapping an 0-4-1 drought at the First Niagara Center

Chris Stewart scored the tying goal with 6:52 left in regulation and Zemgus Girgensons had the shootout winner along with an assist on Brian Flynn's second-period tally.

"You hate losing more than you love winning," Girgensons said. "Winning is awesome. It's a different feeling. It feels good. I just hope we can keep it going and improve."

Buffalo will next face a Montreal team that's been outscored 18-5 during a 1-3-1 stretch. The Canadiens had allowed 22 goals in a 7-1-0 start with seven coming in the lone defeat at Tampa Bay on Oct. 13.

They let Chicago pull away for a 5-0 victory Tuesday by giving up three goals in the final period and were shut out for the second time in five games.

The Canadiens also extended their power-play drought by going 0 for 4. They're 0 for 17 in the last seven games and 3 for 37 this season.

Montreal also allowed a power-play goal for the third straight game.

"We've got to stay positive as much as possible," forward Tomas Plekanec said. "We've got to take a step back and start from the basics. It's not our first time going through it."

The Canadiens (8-4-1) have been on the other side of shutouts in their last two matchups against Buffalo with Carey Price and Dustin Tokarski each earning one. Price has given up five goals in each of the first two games this month and with Montreal playing on back-to-back nights, Tokarski could make the start.

The shutout in Buffalo on March 16 is Tokarski's lone one in 13 career appearances. The Canadiens have won three in a row at the First Niagara and outscored Buffalo 15-4 in the last five overall matchups.

Price allowed three goals on 74 shots in three wins against the Sabres last season.

Buffalo is expected to send out Michal Neuvirth for the second straight game after he made 36 saves in his second victory in three starts Sunday.

Neuvirth is 1-2-0 with a 3.03 goals-against average in his last three matchups with Montreal after going 4-1-0 with a 1.82 GAA in his first six.

He'll try to get some more help from a Buffalo penalty kill that went 4 for 4 against the Red Wings. The Sabres had allowed six goals in the 17 times they were short-handed in the prior five games.

Buffalo's power play is just 1 for 42 this season.

The Canadiens' Brendan Gallagher has five goals and one assist in nine career matchups, including two goals in last season's series, but is mired in a career-worst eight-game point drought.

Former Montreal captain Brian Gionta will face the Canadiens for the first time since signing a three-year deal with the Sabres in July. He has one assist so far for Buffalo, where he's also captain.

Preview: Red Wings (6-3) at Rangers (5-4)

      Date: November 05, 2014 8:00 PM EDT

The New York Rangers have been hit by a slew of injuries, but they may at least get Mats Zuccarello back.

With their top scorer from last season likely in the lineup, the Rangers will try to get back on track with a fifth straight win over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

New York (5-4-2) has followed a three-game winning streak by going 1-1-2. Not helping matters are injuries to captain Ryan McDonagh (separated shoulder) and Kevin Klein (foot) and a suspension to fellow defensemen John Moore.

Coach Alain Vigneault, however, isn't discouraged since the Rangers' last two games ended in shootout defeats.

"We're playing some solid hockey," Vigneault said after Monday's 4-3 loss to St. Louis. "We lose the last two games in a shootout, so I would say that our 5-on-5 play in both (was good). We are taking steps in the right direction."

Another positive step would be getting Derek Stepan back from a broken leg suffered in preseason, but he's not expected to return until Saturday in Toronto at the earliest.

Zuccarello, however, is likely to be back after sitting out a game with an undisclosed injury.

"At this time I would say there is a possibility with Mats, who skated (Tuesday) and felt better so we'll see how he feels (Wednesday)," Vigneault told the team's official website. "Step has been medically cleared, but unfortunately he has not been able to have one team practice.

"I will put him in the best position to succeed."

Having at least Zuccarello on the ice could provide a spark, although he has four points after getting a career-high 59 last season. He had two goals in last season's three meetings with Detroit (6-2-3), and left wing Chris Kreider had that many in a 3-0 win at MSG on March 9.

The Rangers have won four straight over the Red Wings, and Henrik Lundqvist has been incredible while in net for three of them - all at home. He's allowed one goal on 95 shots, shutting them out in the last two, including a 30-save effort in the most recent.

The 2012 Vezina Trophy winner should get the nod again after being rested Monday in favor of backup Cam Talbot, who had 31 saves but allowed goals on two of three shootout attempts.

Detroit opened a three-game trip with a 3-2 shootout loss to Buffalo on Sunday, and followed with a 3-1 defeat to Ottawa two days later. The Red Wings were outshot 16-2 in the opening period en route to their fourth road loss in five games.

"We didn't skate, and when you don't skate it's tough to win battles," defenseman Niklas Kronwall said. "We didn't even play in the first period."

Henrik Zetterberg leads the Wings with 15 points, collecting five in four games after finding the net against the Senators. The captain, though, has just one point in his past four meetings with New York, and he's come up empty on eight shots in the last two.

Jimmy Howard hasn't started on back-to-back nights, so he may be rested after stopping 29 of 31 shots Tuesday. He went 0-2-1 with a 2.29 goals-against average versus the Rangers last season.

Backup Jonas Gustavsson has a 2.01 GAA while winning his last two visits to the Garden, but those came with Toronto and the most recent was on Dec. 5, 2011.

Preview: Islanders (6-5) at Ducks (10-3)

        Date: November 05, 2014 10:30 PM EDT

Off to a slow offensive start on their five-game trip, the New York Islanders could find it harder to produce regardless of who is in goal for the stingy Anaheim Ducks.

That task awaits the Islanders as they try to avoid a fourth straight defeat Wednesday night against the NHL-leading Ducks.

New York (6-5-0) opened its western swing with a 5-0 loss at Colorado on Thursday despite recording 40 shots on goal. Two nights later, the Islanders were held to 20 shots and Kyle Okposo's fourth goal in a 3-1 defeat at San Jose.

"We have to find a way to score," coach Jack Capuano said. "When you're not scoring, players are trying to make things happen and you can't fault them for that. The frustrating part is how well we're playing and not scoring."

The Islanders are 0 for 9 on the power play in the last two games and 3 for 30 while going 2-5-0 since they went 6 for 14 to open with four straight victories.

"I felt like we were throwing lots of pucks at the net, but these Western teams don't give up much," defenseman Travis Hamonic told the Islanders' official website.

Things likely won't get any easier against the Ducks (10-3-0), whose 24 goals allowed rank among the fewest in the league.

Owner of a 15-8 scoring advantage while winning four straight versus New York, Anaheim has yielded two or fewer goals in eight of nine overall and killed all 15 penalties over the last four.

"That's just the (defensive identity) we want to have as a team and when we're doing that I think we're up there with one of the hardest teams to play against in the league," defenseman Cam Fowler said.

The Ducks allowed three goals during an opening four-game home winning streak that ended with a 4-1 loss to the Sharks on Oct. 26.

Anaheim followed that by giving up five goals and posting three one-goal victories during a 3-1-0 trip that concluded with Sunday's 3-2 victory at Colorado.

With starter Frederik Andersen unavailable because of leg tightness and backup John Gibson scratched after suffering a lower-body injury in warmups, veteran Jason LaBarbera made 16 saves in his Anaheim debut hours after he was recalled from Norfolk of the AHL.

With Gibson on injured reserve and Andersen - 7-1-0 and among NHL leaders with a 1.60 goals-against average and .941 save percentage - day to day, LaBarbera remains in the mix.

"Until we get both goalies healthy, he's with us," coach Bruce Boudreau said.

No matter who is in net, the Ducks confidently return home looking to carry over the momentum built from a successful road stretch.

"We're feeling good," Boudreau said. "The season is long, so you want to be happy that you won but you don't want to make a big deal of it."

After being held without a point in three straight games, Corey Perry had two goals and an assist in the last two. He has two goals and five assists during the Ducks' three-game overall winning streak against the Islanders.

Teammate Ryan Getzlaf recorded a hat trick and had an assist during a 5-3 win on Long Island in the most recent meeting Dec. 21.

Okposo has four goals with an assist in five games versus Anaheim.

          Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

NFL trends to ponder with Week 10 approaching

-- Bengals are 12-1-1 in last fourteen home games.

-- Broncos are 10-4 as a road favorite.

-- Cowboys are 1-6 in last seven pre-bye games.

          -- Saints are 16-3-1 in last 20 non-divisional games.

-- Steelers are 3-8 in last 11 games as a road favorite.

-- Arizona is 8-3-1 in its last dozen home games.

          **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

          13) This will remain fluid for the rest of the month, but if the college football tournament started today, the semi-finals would be:
          -- Mississippi State vs Oregon
          -- Florida State vs Auburn.

Alabama and TCU are the first two teams on the outside looking in.

          12) Going to miss those political ads on TV—well, no I’m not. Whats the old joke? How do you know if a politician is lying? If his/her lips are moving.

          11) Supposedly, Alex Rodriguez paid his cousin $1M to keep quiet about PED’s. Damn, I wish someone would pay me $1M to shut my mouth; I’d make Shields & Yarnell look like freakin’ auctioneers.

          10) This is the month MAC football takes over ESPNU and ESPN2 on Tuesday, Wednesdays; I think Akron’s last four games are all on Tuesday nights.

I used to joke that teams would play at 4am if ESPN wanted them to, then the basketball tip-off marathon was born (Nov 18 this year) when there are actually games played at 6am and 8am local time in the east. It must help the schools involved or they wouldn’t do it.

          9) European golfers Marcel Siem and Alexander Levy openly wagered 200 Euros (roughly $252) on each round of their tournament last week; not sure the powers-that-be were all that excited about openly gambling on a match during a tournament. Phil Mickelson is notorious for wagering on practice rounds, but that’s different.

          8) Quick look at QB situations in the NFC East find Dallas/Philly starting different QBs this month because of injury. Washington started three different QB’s in their last three games then there are the Giants, where Eli Manning has started their last 158 games without a miss. The immobile Manning is struggling behind a shaky OL, but he plays every week and that’s important, to be a dependable player.

          7) Phillies are rumored to be shopping 1B Ryan Howard, who can’t move, can’t hit lefties and makes $20M a year. Good luck there.

Only places I could conceive of him being useful would be Baltimore/Texas/Houston, AL teams with small home parks, but the Orioles are too smart for that. I guess Texas is a possibility. If the Astros traded for him it would be intriguing, since they’ve tried so hard to make Jonathan Singleton their 1B of the future.

          6) If you live in Indianapolis, you might vote at Hinkle Fieldhouse, where Butler plays its basketball games and where the final basketball scenes in Hoosiers were shot. How cool would that be, voting where Jimmy Chitwood ran the picket fence.

          5) Cleveland Indians gave Terry Francona a much-deserved contract extension thru 2018; I enjoyed listening to him on TV, but glad he is doing well running a ballclub. Still think the Red Sox screwed up getting rid of him, though they won a World Series with John Farrell, after the Bobby Valentine debacle.

          4) Cleveland Browns are a surprising/uplifting 5-3, but QB Brian Hoyer’s contract is up after this year and the team has a lot of $$ tied up in Johnny Manziel. This has to be the owner’s call I would think, whether to re-sign Hoyer or plunge forward with Manziel. Am very curious to see what they do, because their players are watching too. You know damn well Hoyer has the other players’ trust. Cutting him loose would be very risky business.

          3) Rockets 108, Heat 89-- Houston is off to a 5-0 start despite whiffing in their free agent dealings. Rockets made 17 of 36 behind the arc. Think the Thunder miss James Harden? He had 25 points, 9 rebounds, 10 assists in this game.

Kostas Papanikolaou has done really well replacing Chandler Parsons as a shooter; Houston was +17 when he was on the court in this game, even when he was off.

          2) I highly recommend getting the NBA League Pass, tremendous entertainment on nights where there is a full schedule of games.

          1) Cubs are said to be going heavily after free agent catcher Russell Martin, who will use the lack of quality catchers to become really, really rich this winter. Hope the Cubs are saving lot of money to buy some pitchers- thats what wins.

              Wednesday, November 5

Under banks big on the ice Tuesday

The Under posted an 8-3-1 record in the NHL Tuesday night, cashing in at a rate of 72.73 percent. The lone push came from the Chicago Blackhawks 5-0 rout of the Montreal Canadiens.

Season-to-date, the Under has registered a record of 99-70-14, good for 58.58 percent.

Wednesday has three games on the board as Montreal visits Buffalo, the New York Rangers host the Detroit Red Wings and New York Islanders continue their roadie at the Anaheim Ducks.

Line off the board as Ducks face goalie concerns

The Anaheim Ducks host the New York Islanders Wednesday night and lines are currently off the board as the Ducks move forward with serious goalie concerns.

Frederik Andersen is day-to-day with a leg injury, but more serious is John Gibson's groin injury. Gibson has been placed on IR and called up Igor Bobkov from Norfolk.

As of Wednesday morning, there had been no formal announcement if Bobkov or Jason Labarbera would get the start between the pipes.

Sharp 'out for a bit' with lower-body injury

Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp is out indefinitely after sustaining a lower-body injury in Chicago's 5-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday. Sharp left the game seven minutes into the third period after taking a seemingly innocuous hit from Montreal defenseman Alexei Emelin along the boards.

Sabres cashing Under tickets at a rapid rate

The Buffalo Sabres' offensive struggles have been well documented so far in the young NHL campaign, and as a result, bettors backing the Under in their games have been profiting.

The Under is 7-0-2 in the Sabres' last nine games through Tuesday. They play host to the Montreal Canadiens Wednesday.

The Habs are currently -205 faves on the moneyline.

                              **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

                              13) Lebron James played 85 minutes in Cleveland’s first two games, which is way too many; he was down to 35 in Tuesday’s loss in Portland, then played 42 minutes in Utah last night, where the Cavaliers lost 102-100.

Coach Blatt is going to have to learn how to dispense minutes to preserve his starters for the long season, especially James. Season is 82 games and as many as four playoff series, which could be 28 more games.

High drama at the end in Utah last night; Gordon Hayward hit a fadeaway from deep on the right wing as the horn sounded, dropping the Cavaliers to 1-3.

                              12) Cavaliers made their first ten shots in Portland, five of which were 3-pointers, then shot 28% the rest of the game; they need to find a dependable third scorer to supplement James/Kevin Love’s production.

                              11) Speaking of James, did the Miami Heat lower its ticket prices once he left? Its fairly obvious they won’t be as good; somehow I doubt they lowered prices, but hopefully they did.

                              10) FOX Sports 1 basketball analyst Bill Raftery filed for trademarks to his pet phrases "Onions" and "With a kiss" last week, protecting the use of the words as Raftery's during sports broadcasts and on clothes.

                              9) How did Sacramento let Isaiah Thomas get away? The lefty Washington alum is pretty good and is helping Phoenix bigtime so far. Not like the Kings have so many good guards that they couldn’t use the guy.

                              8) If you’re in Las Vegas December 17-20, the Jerry Tarkanian Classic will be played, a terrific high school basketball tournament with lot of really good players. I was there the last two years; its worth your time, if you’re in Vegas that week. Most of the games are at Bishop Gorman HS, I think.

                              7) Next big Cuban baseball star to come here will be 3B/OF Yasmany Tomas, who is said to be a stocky slugger being pursued by both the Phillies and Red Sox. Philly could use the money AJ Burnett just turned down to sign Tomas, who is 24 years old.

                              6) There are reports the Eagles were souring on Nick Foles even before he got hurt; Philly turned ball over 16 times in their last five games (-9) prompting rumors Eagle brass weren’t happy with him, all of which makes Mark Sanchez’ first Philly start Monday night a little more interesting.

                              5) Alfonso Soriano retired this week; he is one of six players in history with 400+ doubles, 400+ homers and 250+ steals in his career. Wasn’t much of a fielder, but was a very dangerous hitter.

                              4) Houston Texans pulled the plug on Ryan Fitzpatrick and will start Ryan Mallett at QB in Week 11; they have this week off. This was inevitable, with Mallett having been acquired from New England for a draft pick- they have to see what they have to see if they want to sign Mallett going forward.

                              3) Dodgers signed A’s assistant general manager Farhan Zaidi, a Berkeley-educated economist, as their next GM. Zaidi grew up in the Philippines, attended MIT as an undergraduate and, after getting his doctorate at Cal-Berkeley, decided to try to break into baseball after reading Moneyball. Hey, I've seen Moneyball the movie 25 times; can I get a job with the A's?

Not surprising, but it looks like the Dodgers’ new direction under Andrew Friedman will be heavily weighted towards analytics.

                              2) Timberwolves 98, Nets 91-- Minnesota led 17-2, then Nets went on a 34-14 run, but Wolves closed game on 18-5 run. Rubio had 14 points, 12 assists, 8 rebounds as all five Minnesota starters scored in double figures.

                              1) I know they do it because they can charge more for those tickets, but it is weird how close some fans sit to the team benches in NBA arenas. At Lakers' home games in Staples Center, the opposing coach often stands right in front of Jack Nicholson. If a guy goes lunging out of bounds for a loose ball, he might knock over people's drinks who are sitting right there. You don't get that in other sports.
