Sorry to hear about Guiness.
I had a dog (RotW) eventually had to have both hips replaced. I have to tell you it worked our fine for him. It's tough on the family for awhile, but like you said it's like a kid and the extra time and care you give is just part of being a parent.
I am confident that whatever you decide WILL be the right choice....
You also might want to ask the doc about things like Ester-C. It's a C vitamin that the vet that worked on my dog recommended HIGHLY. That was about 11 years ago but I think it helped bunches with the recovery and back then also read that it may help keep the healthy hip....healthy.
My dog's displasia had already set in both hips prior.
