wow....how do you spell desperation?
NEW YORK -- Looking for any arms to pitch in and help the starting rotation, the Yankees signed veteran right-hander Hideo Nomo to a Minor League contract Wednesday.
The 36-year-old Nomo was released by the Devil Rays on Monday after clearing waivers. He went 5-8 with a 7.24 ERA in 19 starts with the Devil Rays before being designated for assignment on July 16.
"Nomo has been successful on a number of big stages," said manager Joe Torre. "Hopefully, he can help us."
"If you look at Nomo and if you look at some of our in-house choices, it's a no-brainer," said general manager Brian Cashman. "I'm thankful that he would agree and come to try it with us."
In parts of 11 big league seasons, Nomo is 123-109 with a 4.21 ERA. He ranks sixth in the Majors with 1,865 strikeouts over the last 10 seasons, and is one of only five pitchers in Major League history to toss a no-hitter in both the National and American League.
Although the Yankees have an open spot in their rotation for Saturday's game, Nomo will not take the ball for New York. He hasn't pitched since July 15, when he was roughed up for seven runs in 3 2/3 innings against Toronto. Instead, Nomo will report to Triple-A Columbus and make at least one rehab start before joining the Yankees.
"He hasn't pitched in 15 days," Cashman said. "So they'll have a meeting with him about where he's at physically and what he's done in that time frame and make a choice."
Nomo is the second veteran pitcher acquired by the Yankees in the past two weeks, as the club dealt for Al Leiter shortly after the All-Star break.
"Like Leiter, you have a guy who is competitive, who has had success and experience," Torre said. "That goes a long way toward keeping you in a ballgame and giving you a chance to win, and that's all we really want at this point."
Nomo becomes the second Japanese player on the Yankees, joining left fielder Hideki Matsui. The two players never faced each other in Japan, but Matsui homered against Nomo when the Yankees and Dodgers met two years ago.
"I know how well he pitched during his prime," Matsui said through his translator. "If he can pitch that effectively, that would be huge for us."
In 1995, Nomo became the first Japanese-born player to join a Major League team after playing professionally in Japan. He won NL Rookie of the Year honors that season, going 13-6 with a 2.54 ERA and leading the NL in strikeouts with 236.
"I remember it very clearly," Matsui said. "Every time he was on the mound and pitching, it was a huge deal in Japan. They were always televising it."
When Nomo joins the Yankees, he will hold a spot in the rotation while Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright, Chien-Ming Wang and Kevin Brown are all out with injuries.
"He's gone several different places, and when he's surfaced, he's pitched well for a period of time," Torre said. "That certainly is something you look for."
