Dave,do yall play year round? Were already into football with my 8 year old but I have noticed one of the stud baseball teams at the rec have started fall ball. I'm guessing with the temps here in the south y'all might take Dec and Jan off but play the rest of the time.

We do all our fundraisers in the fall.
But some teams are playing already. Not as big as summer , but still playing.jc Wishes He Can Get A Goat

Im just scared alot of these kids I see will be burned out by the time they are teenagers. One of our Elite teams at the rec played 189 games last year. That's not counting practices and like you said fundraisers and stuff like that. I love being on the field coaching and helping kids but 4 or 5 months a year is plenty for me!!
One of my biggest bitches with this movement into "travel ball" is the fact that the parents drink the "koolaid" and believe that their son MUST play travel ball ALL year long if they want to make it at the next level. That is not true. Derek Jeter, Mike Trout, etc., all played more than just baseball in high school.
You said they played 189 games in a season ??!! That is totally absurd. Kids get burned out and more importantly, they get hurt.
Dr. James Andrews has said he is doing more arm surgeries on kids 13 and younger now than he ever did. And the biggest reason he said is not that kids throw a fastball or curveball, it is because of OVERUSE. Your arm is not meant to go in the direction (overhand) that it takes to throw a baseball. That is why girls can pitch all day (underhand) and never be hurt.
Yet, in the infinite wisdom of all these "experts" in travel ball, they feel that their son and team MUST play year round.
There is a reason why the pros take 2 1/2 months off when the season is over. They don't want their guys throwing at all so their arm can recoup.
But, some of these "elite" teams and coaches think they know more the Dr. Andrews or the trainer for the Yankees.
It just amazes me how these people can't see what is right and what is wrong.
We use the Fall to fundraise. Do we go out and hit once in a while? Sure, with the boys that aren't playing football, basketball, etc., and that is only once every week to 10 days.
Our local high school team here from New Orleans, Retif Oil, just last night, won the American Legion World Series. That is a great honor. I was fortunate enough to have coached 4 of those players (one who signed to play with Alabama) and I promise you, they won't pick up a baseball until January.
Kids need to be kids and play what THEY want - NOT what mommy or daddy want.
Just my opinion.jc Wishes He Can Get A Goat
