Rich Harden (shoulder) is close to resuming a throwing program.

"I don't want to go too quick,'' said Harden. "I can go light, ease into it, build up my arm strength. The training, the rehab, is excellent, stuff I missed out before (the last time he was on the DL). When you don't pitch for a while, you lose a lot of individual muscle control; it's amazing. I didn't realize how far off I was.'' Harden is still around a month away from being activated from the disabled list.

The most important news about Kerry Wood came Wednesday, the day after his one-inning shutout stint with the Peoria Chiefs.
"Today he felt great," Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said.

So Wood, rehabilitating from tendinitis in his right shoulder, is on track to pitch in relief again for the Chiefs tonight and Friday. After that, Hendry said, "We'll regroup and get a plan together."

Hendry indicated it was likely the oft-injured Cubs hurler would continue his rehab journey with at least one more back-to-back assignment at a higher level in the club's minor-league organization before a decision is made to activate him.

"It'll be a nice story," if Wood makes it back, Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "And it'll be a nice pickup for us: an experienced pitcher with a nice, fresh arm."

There is still no timetable for the return of Rich Harden, as the right-hander prefers to work his way back at his own pace, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "I'll go with how my body feels," he said Tuesday. "That's what I've been doing the last three or four weeks and my body feels great. But looking three or four weeks in advance, there's no point, because I don't know. I just try to make steady progress." It's still possible that Harden could make a start before the end of the year, but either way, there's no reason to expect any fantasy value out of him the rest of the way.
