**FRIDAY'S PLAYS (9-22):
{CFB-Play}
**TOP RATED PLAY ON: (3 Units)
Nevada -7 +100.................. (note: NW curr up 7-0 1st Q)
-I gotta go with the Home team playing with a lot of motivation to beat a Big Ten team on National TV....These are the type of games which coach Ault has been able to get his teams to raise their level of play inorder to get the win...His plan when he returned back to coaching was to get the Wolfpack program back to the national stage...and one of best ways he has expressed to his team to do that was by beating a big time conference teams on national tv..
In tonights matchup...there exist many reasons why I like the Wolfpack and coach Ault to get this big win....And below are a few of the main ones...
First , NW's lost of their HC Walker is something that I believe they wont be able to fully overcome emotionally and mentally from...Walker recruited these guys and its hard on any player to have to now put their faith, not to mention, buy into a new coaches philosophies....Under new coach Fitzgerald, they are still running the almost the same style of schemes on offense...but, he still is going to need time to get these guys to believe in him, like they did in Walker...The first game vs Miami Ohio was a solid performance put out by the Wildcats, but it seems that one was played on a higher emotional level, inorder for them to get that win for their departed coach...Following that game though, it seem that they have simply gone flat...and I dont think they will be able to get back to that emotional level again, until the conf games begin, and because they know this is a team from the Wacky Wac...
Second reason, why I feel NW will go down today...is due to the Fact that they will have a Freshman QB at the helm...Throughout the past few years, NW was able to find a lot of success because their QB was a veteran signal caller, who could run the show efficiently...In fact, their last 4 QBs for the Wildcats were all solid playmaking veterans who knew how to run and get the most out of this system...Last years record setting QB Basanez, a 3 year starter, was last seasons ultra-efficient Big 10 leader in total offense...Under him, NW was able to finished the '05 season ranked 4th in the nation in total offense and 7th in passing...This season, there is no experienced QB taking over where he and the others left off....No, this year the Wildcats available QBs are young Freshmans that need to learn from scratch how to run the show efficiently....Making it a harder transition is the lost of last seasons #2 and #3 receivers, who accounted for 115 catches and 1,217 yards of production for their offense..They have targets this year, but Northwestern QBs Mike Kafka and Andrew Brewer aren’t consistent enough to win a game like this.
Side Note: Northwestern - Passing: Mike Kafka, 10-18, 76 yds, 1 INT vs E Michigan's defense..
Third reason...I dont believe that there will be much improvement to a run defense which couldnt stop anyone last year, ending the season as the worst in total defense in the nation allowing 480 yards and 34 points per game...They also struggled at rushing the passer last season, recording just 12 sacks..and this year this should continue to be a big problem again...Sure the Wildcats was able to shut down E Michigan's spread attack, but E Mich's offense lacked many weapons...And, the Wolfpack's "Pistol" Offense is loaded and will be a tough task for them to contain...
Fourth reason...the Wolfpack return 7 starters from last seasons offense which finished ranked 14th in the nation and 15th in scoring...Leading this potent offense is Senior QB Rowe, who is coming off of a solid game against previously undefeated Col St...In that game, he went 19 of 22 for 210 yards and he also ran 13 times for 65 yards...Rowe, unlike his young competitors has All-America capabilities with great mobility and an accurate arm...And, he knows his complex offense backwards and forwards...Rowe is a big boy at 6-5, 225-pounds and besides having a solid arm...he also has great mobility as well....Last season, he was the Wolfpacks 3rd leading rusher on the team....
NW have faced a bunch of duel threat QBs in their conference last season...but this year when they faced New Hampshire's Ricky Santos, they werent able to stop him from rushing for 3 TDs and throwing for 2 also...If they couldnt stop New Hampshire's QB Santos from completing 18 of 24 passes for 206 yards and 2 TDs or from rushing 11 times for 34 yards and 3 scores...there is no way I can see them being able to stop Nevada's Rowe from doing the same...Rowe will bring this untested secondary of the Wildcats under fire in a big way when they go into their 4 wide receiver set or their 3 receiver 1 tight end 1 back formation called the "Pistol" offense...
Wolfpack Defense is the final reason I love Nevada today....This defense returns 8 starters from last season...and one area that they should compete well is upfornt, as there is a lot of size and beef to help them stop the Wildcats RB Sutton from taking most of the pressure off their young QB's....Last week, the Wolfpack defense came up big holding previously undefeated Rams to just 177 yards of total offense..Solid!
Bottom line in this one...is NW lacks the leadership and play maker at the helm....and because of this, they arent consistantly able to make them big plays enough to gain momentum.....And as their coach Fitzgerald stated, "College football is about big plays and it's about momentum,""We had plays out on the field to make, and we didn't make them."...Today I dont see them being able to make those big plays needed to come out of Reno with a win....Its the Wolfpacks Time to Shine!....GO NEVADA!
Side Note: Under coach Ault, in 21+ seasons at the helm, his teams have an .882 winning percentage on their home turf...
