Michael Vick's comeback is gathering steam off the field as well. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback has landed what may be his first commercial endorsement since being released from prison on dogfighting charges. Vick is appearing in a TV commercial for Woodbury Nissan in Woodbury, N.J. near the City of Brotherly Love.
The humorous TV spot shows the kinder, gentler Vick running around the showroom in his Eagles jersey, diagramming plays, signing off on deals and appearing in mock press conferences.
Tom McMenamin, executive manager of the dealership, says it's "100%" Vick's first endorsement since his release from prison. McMenamin was "hesitant" at first that dog and animal lovers would go ballistic over using Vick. But the response from customers has been positive. "They love it. They love the spot," he says. Now, that McMenamin has got Vick under contract he'll offer the same deal to Cliff Lee of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Vick is not getting paid but he does get the free use of a customized Nissan Armada worth $54,000. Vick was dumped by corporate sponsors such as Nike after he was charged with dog-fighting. A local car dealership isn't the Swoosh. But it's a start. If Vick leads the Eagles to the Super Bowl, he could end up being the comeback story of the year on Madison Avenue as well as in the NFL.
