  • The Most Valuable Sports Team Brands

Forbes calculated the brand value--the portion of a team's overall value that is derived from its name--of the 147 most lucrative teams in professional baseball, basketball, football, hockey and soccer. To do so, we added up revenues from sponsorships, naming rights, local media, tickets and merchandise that are not attributable to market demographics and league. The top 10 includes teams spread out over two continents and across three sports, including those known the world over as the Bronx Bombers, Red Devils and America's Team.

    1. New York Yankees

    League: Major League Baseball

    Brand Value: $328 million

With a cash cow for a new stadium and a 27th World Series banner now hanging beyond the right field bleachers, the Bronx Bombers claim top spot in our ranking for the first time.

    2. Manchester United

    League: English Premier League

    Brand Value: $285 million

The team estimates that more than half its 333 million supporters hail from Asia, where the English Premier League is the most widely distributed sports property and Man U is the most popular team.

    3. Real Madrid

    League: Spain's La Liga

    Brand Value: $240 million

Real's seven year, $1.4 billion TV deal is the largest for a single team in professional sports.

    4. Dallas Cowboys

    League: National Football League

    Brand Value: $208 million

The Cowboys brand is worth $128 million more than the average NFL team and $15 million more than that of NFC East rivals Philadelphia and New York combined.

    5. Barcelona

    League: Spain's La Liga

    Brand Value: $180 million

Barcelona, which won a record six domestic and international titles last year, turns down millions of dollars in shirt sponsorships each year to instead partner with nonprofit UNICEF.

    6. Bayern Munich

    League: German Bundesliga

    Brand Value: $178 million

Bayern Munich's 30-year pact with insurer Allianz is among the longest naming rights deals in professional sports.

    7. Arsenal

    League: English Premier League

    Brand Value: $176 million

The Gunners brand is more valuable than that of principal shareholder Stan Kroenke's other five sports teams (including the NHL's Avalanche, NBA's Nuggets and NFL's Rams), combined.

    8. Boston Red Sox

    League: Major League Baseball

    Brand Value: $163 million

The Red Sox average ticket cost of $50 last season was almost double the Major League Baseball average.

    9. New York Mets

    League: Major League Baseball

    Brand Value: $158 million

The Mets have built their brand in part by successfully integrating the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants' storied pasts with their own (look no further than Citi Field's Jackie Robinson Rotunda).

    10. New England Patriots

    League: National Football League

    Brand Value: $156 million

The Pats, who've won three Super Bowls and five conference titles under the ownership of Bob Kraft, draw the highest local TV ratings among AFC teams in the 15 largest media markets in the U.S.
