Bob Baffert, trainer of Lookin At Lucky, has won the Kentucky Derby three times, but never with the favorite. He finished fourth with 9-5 favorite Point Given in 2001, and fifth (Excellent Meeting) and 11th (General Challenge) in 1999 with the favored entry.
Call it bad luck or a propensity to find trouble but in most of his races, he has gotten into trouble. The experience he picked up in those races is invaluable, but the Kentucky Derby is a race where you want to avoid trouble. With 20 horses set to run, jockeys and their horses have the challenge of avoiding the pitfalls that comes with the largest group of horses in one race. To Lucky’s credit, he has dealt with adversity well in his career but those were against much smaller fields and not the caliber of horses he will face Saturday. To compound things, a bad post position draw added to his woes. The bottom line is that Lucky will need his four leaf clover to win the greatest race in America.
