What a match. I must say, while it was Arod's backhand that made the difference so far in this transformation, his serve was by far the bigger element in this match against Roger. Federer made it difficult for Andy to get aggressive with his backhand, and Roddick had to just keep hitting bombs at a high percentage, which he did for a whole 5 sets. But boy, he framed 3 shots in a row at the end there lol.

I agree! It's one thing if Roger beat him with a few good shots but Andy gave it away with 3 lousy mishits, 2 on his backhand.

roddick had his chances many times and simply didnt come threw. that imo is the difference between being the best and being very good.

What a match yesterday...

Andy choked that 2nd set away...would have forced Roger to win 3 straight sets if he was able to convert any of those 4 set points in the tie breaker....

Roddick has to win 3 points in a row for the match and Federer only needs to win 2 in a row.

Guys Roddick was at a huge disadvantage in that final set once it went past 7-6 on serve. In a set in which no tie break is involved whomever serves first in the set or gets broken last is behind the eight ball big time.

You're right he probably wont until either Fed retires or he plays Nadal in the final. Nadal withdrawing from this tourney due to injury really opened the door for his opportunity....

i really don't get how roger get's no love on here, why does everyone like roddick so much ? and don't tell me USA because the same people always root for nadal vs roger.

chad these are not my words i heard it on the radio late last night but someone kept saying that and someone called in and said that's like saying OHH, well the steelers had a much easier time winning the superbowl because tom brady was out all year......(in some ways i agree, but not really, it's not the same)

my point would be injuries are a part of the game....thing is no one really brings up that a couple of nadals wins over roger was because roger was playing through an injury,(hamstring). How about a little credit to roger instead of everyone saying andy gave it away, you get that deep into a finals match nobody gives anything away, andy made mistakes first and roger capitalized, it was exactly what andy was waiting for roger to do.... make a mistake, andy made it first.

here we go this is classic, he's injured but he played an hour and half more without federer breaking him. LOL. How about federer straight drained you physically and emotionally and you just don't feel like playing, that's what it sounds like to me, but what do i know i'm a federer fan. (isn't the davis cup where you represent your country ?) i read the article yes it is, it also seems like Mcenroe agrees with my viewpoint, he's just tired, not injured.

The U.S. Tennis Association announced that Roddick wouldn’t participate in this week’s Davis Cup matches because he was hurt during his loss a day earlier to Roger Federer at the All England Club—a match that finished 16-14 in the longest fifth set in Grand Slam final history.

Roddick slipped and tumbled to the grass in the eighth game of the fourth set Sunday. He stayed down for a few moments, then rose, grimacing, and toweled off.

The 26-year-old American would go on to play for more than another 1 1/2 hours, finally succumbing when Federer broke him for the first time all match in the 77th and last game.

After the match, Roddick was asked whether he hurt himself in that fall, and he replied, “No. It was OK.”

He is being replaced on the U.S. Davis Cup team by Mardy Fish, who reached the third round at Wimbledon. Roddick is ranked No. 6, while Fish is No. 23.

When he was asked to play Davis Cup, Fish pulled out of this week’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, R.I., where he was the tournament’s top-seeded player.

Roddick had played in 18 consecutive Davis Cup matches for the United States, helping the country with the 2007 title.

“Andy has been a stalwart for this team the past nine years, and his dedication to Davis Cup and his teammates is unquestioned,” U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe said.

Croatia hosts the U.S. on clay at Porec, Croatia, starting Friday.

“Mardy is a Davis Cup veteran and we appreciate his willingness to join the team on short notice. He has been playing well and we are glad to have him back in the singles lineup,” McEnroe said. “Andy had a great run at Wimbledon. He battled for more than four hours yesterday and fought hard to reach the final. Understandably, his body is not up for the rigors of Davis Cup in such a short turnaround.”

Fish will be joined in singles action for the U.S. by James Blake, while twins Bob and Mike Bryan will play doubles.

Wimbledon quarterfinalist Ivo Karlovic and Marin Cilic will lead Croatia, which won the Davis Cup in 2005.

“It’s worse for us,” Goran Prpic, Croatia’s Davis Cup captain, said in Porec. “Instead of an injured Roddick, who after such a final at Wimbledon would have had to play matches on clay, we’ll have to face a motivated Fish.”
