  • Walmart Employees Only Average $8 per hour

In this clip, Bill Maher calls out the Walton family for the disregard they show for their workers while having a fortune so large it dwarfs the GDP of most developing countries.

“Fifty years ago, America’s biggest employer was General Motors, where people made the modern equivalent of $50 an hour. Today, America’s biggest employer is Wal-Mart, where workers make $8 an hour, which means you can share a room in a motel with a transient drifter who cuts his toenails with a machete.”

He then takes aim at the Wal-Mart annual report, which shows that the bulk of Wal-Mart’s sales comes from food, “which their employees need food stamps to buy”, while the family just built a billion dollar art museum in Arkansas.

He then hits it home, mocking Alice Walton’s desire to do something to help people: “Why not give your employees a raise, you deluded nitwit?”

That response was predicatable from someone (almost anyone) on the forum.

and to which I reply, fuck walmart. Now see, that's how we have an intellectual conversation that's respectful of differing perspectives.

The employees are free to quit aren't they? Go get another job if they don't like it. Then Wal Mart will have to start being competitive.

          Minimal skills = minimal pay

I fall in the middle on this issue.Walmart could probably give every employee a 2 dollar an hour raise, and their execs would hardly notice.Sure their bottom line would be lower, and their bonuses and salaries would be lower, but to billionaires,it would be minimal. Its a corporate greed in my view. How do you live on less than 20K a year?Everybody bitches about people sucking the government tit,but nobody has any viable alternatives.Sure, they could quit and go on unemployment, but that only makes the problem worse.Lets just face it,some people don't have superior skills.Should they live in poverty and struggle?

My family is upper middle class, but I tell yall, the middle class is getting squeezed so much, that there won't be a middle anymore.Im all for the free market, the stock market, and the produce market, but sometimes we need to show a little more compassion.Hell at these folks are willing to work.
