Game: Duke vs.Boston College 9:00 p.m. ET
Line: Duke -5 -110
Prediction: Duke -5 -110
Explanation: 2 Units
This has the makings of a great game but Duke is too strong both inside and outside to keep this one close. The Blue Devils have easily won their last two games following their only loss on the season at Georgetown just over a week ago. They are once against dominating the conference with a 7-0 record and have outscored ACC opponents by 14.1 ppg. Even on the road, games have not been close as Duke is outscoring its foes by an average of 13.2 ppg.
Boston College is still ranked fairly high in the polls thanks to its recent five-game winning streak. The best team over that span was North Carolina, who is just a shell of what it was last season. Four of those games which were conference games were all won by seven points or less while the nonconference game against Holy Cross was just a 10-point victory. The Eagles biggest strength is forward Craig Smith and while having the advantage down low almost every game, he won’t here.
Duke counters with the best big man in the country in Sheldon Williams and while Smith might be able to slow him down, the Blue Devils will then take care of business from the perimeter. The Blue Devils are shooting 40.4 percent from three-point distance, while holding the opposition to an ACC-low 27.8 percent. Boston College could be in some serious trouble as the Eagles are allowing a whopping 43.6 percent from behind the arc over their last five games.
Duke also leads the ACC in free throw shooting at 77.0 percent and has actually made more free throws (358) than its opponents have attempted (306). Boston College is respectable from the stripe but their 69.1 percent doesn’t compare. The Blue Devils rank first in the country in RPI (.7191) and second in strength of schedule. That is impressive and even more so knowing that Duke is 11-1 on the year against teams ranked in the top 100 of the RPI. Duke pulls away easily in the end.
