SYRACUSE ORANGEMEN VISIT VILLANOVA WILDCATS SATURDAY 6 PM EST
Two top twenty teams coming off Big East losses after double digit win streaks. Cuse had won eleven straight before losing to #3 UCONN at home, despite a valiant comeback, and Nova losing to #2 Texas and conference leader WVU unfortunately at home. This is another home game that the Wildcats do not want to lose, as both Villanova and Syracuse are tied for third in the Big East with 3-1 records, trailing undefeated WVU and Pitt. Syracuse does have a couple pseudo quality wins over Notre Dame, and Cincinnati, but they also have a loss to Bucknell at home, a team Nova beat on the Bison's court by 19. Let's face it the Cuse has fashioned their 15-3 record against allot of low to mid major teams, predominantly at home, just as Jim Boeheim designed it. We'll get back to that later.
This was to be the year for Villanova from the beginning, and it sure started out that way with 10 straight, but as they get into the meat of conference play they have split the last four, but to very good opposition. Because of the injury to Senior Curtis Sumpter the Cats have been forced to play a four guard offense, that has created many miss-matches for teams that wanted to play them primarily man to man as they constantly broke opponents down off the dribble and either continued to the hoop or pitched for treys by Allen, Foye or Nardi.
As RED ZONE SPORTS sees it, this scenario won't be as nearly effective against the Syracuse 2-3 zone, and will leave the Cats way behind in the offensive rebounding department. Boeheim designed the easy schedule to build confidence for his inexperienced squad, and it has worked. Now Demetrius Nichols, frosh Eric Devendorf and Daryl Watkins believe in themselves, and don't just look for Gerry McNamara to bail them out with a long three. Plus McNamara is getting to know his teammates. Nova has covered only 4 of the last 10 ATS, and we see Syracuse winning with the points on the road. Take The Cuse!!
