    ORANGE BOWL - Tuesday January 3, 2006 - 8:00 PM ET

Florida State +10½ over Penn State

The 72nd Orange Bowl will be a coach’s classic with Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions and Bobby Bowden's Seminoles in just the third-ever meeting between the two legendary coaches and their respective teams. Penn State was picked as a middle-of-the-pack team at best in the Big Ten prior to the start of the 2005 season, but the boys from Happy Valley surprised everyone by going 10-1. It earned them a share of their first Big Ten title since 1994, and the school's first-ever appearance in a BCS game.

Florida State claimed their 12th league title in the last 14 years by upsetting heavily favored Virginia Tech in the first-ever ACC Championship Game. The win put the brakes on a three-game losing streak, the team's first since 1983. Florida State leads the all-time series between these two teams at 1-0-1, with all three meetings now coming in bowl games played in the state of Florida. The last time the two met was in the 1990 Blockbuster Bowl, a 24-17 SU & ATS win.

Led by Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Michael Robinson, the Penn State offense was efficient and explosive this year. Robinson was sensational, throwing for more than 2,000 yards with 16 TDs and nine INTs, He was also deadly with his legs, finishing second on the team in rushing with 785 yards. RB Tony Hunt is the Lions' top ground gainer, having amassed just over 1,000 yards and six scores. The young, but extremely talented receiving corps is led by Deon Butler, while Jordan Norwood picked up the slack when star-in-the-making Derrick Williams went out with a broken arm earlier in the year.

The Penn State defense has stood tall this season. Opponents have found it extremely difficult to put points on the board against the Nittany Lions, doing so for an average of just 16.5 ppg.

Led by freshman QB Drew Weatherford, the Florida State offense ranks 16th in the country with respect to passing. Unfortunately, the team's ground attack has been anything but potent, averaging a just about 100 ypg. As a result, the ‘Noles have struggled in the scoring department at times, averaging 29 ppg. Weatherford leads the ACC in total offense and passing yards, while sitting second with 17 TD passes. Greg Carr is the main receiving threat, as the All-ACC player is averaging 22 yards per reception. Lorenzo Booker heads FSU's rushing assault, logging 550 yards and four TDs on 112 carries for an average near five yards per tote.

Florida State’s leading tackler, A.J. Nicholson, has been sent home by Bowden and will not play in this game. Fortunately for the ‘Noles, they are deep in linebackers. Florida State allowed just over 300 ypg of total offense to rank 15th in the country, while allowing about 3 TDs per game. The Seminoles have come up with 21 turnovers and are permitting just a 30.4 percent success rate on third-down conversion attempts. Stopping the ultra-talented Robinson will be the key to Florida State's success on defense in this game, something few teams have been able to do this year with any degree of consistency.

The Seminoles are certainly fortunate to be here. Had they lost to Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship Game, they might have been sent to the “Potato Bowl” as one of the players put it. After such a victory, teams can either relax and relish the big upset, or they can use the win as a confidence builder for their next game. Few gave the ‘Noles a chance against the Hokies a month ago, although we had a STAR SELECTION on Florida State and they responded in the rare role of double-digit dog. Now, as a double-digit underdog we look for another determined effort here. Bowden sensed his team was preparing as expected. "We got some good work in," he said. “I think winning ACC title has definitely helped them. It should give the boys confidence."

Now Seminole players are angry again. They are taking personally the gripes of opposing fans that they are not a worthy adversary in this Bowl game. QB Drew Weatherford sees the lack of respect being expressed as an extra motivating factor. “It's helping us that people keep talking about the game like that,” Weatherford said. “I guess the feeling up there is sort of that we don't really belong in this game or they wish they would be playing a higher-ranked opponent. That's kind of a slap in a face to a team with such rich history and tradition. I definitely feel like we'll bring the same intensity into the ballgame.”

Center Jeff Castillo adds “For people who said we don’t belong, they’ll see when we play Penn State. We beat three teams that everyone was picking to win the league. We beat Boston College on their home turf. We beat Virginia Tech in the championship game. We beat Miami in the first game of the year. We have great talent but so does everyone else we play so if you make a mistake they’ll make you pay for it.”

A PRO INFO SPORTS College Bowl POWER SYSTEM certainly indicates that the win over Virginia Tech should provide Florida State with some momentum, as Bowl underdogs of 1½-13½ points off…(*CLASSIFIED CLIENT INFO*)…are 9-1 SU & 10-0 ATS ALL-TIME, covering the spread by a whopping 18 points a game on average!

Two other factors figure to help Florida State keep this game close. Bowl teams with a dominant defense, like FSU has, can create turnovers and hold leads. We also like to play ON Bowl underdogs that are playing at home or close to home in state. Such teams thrive in familiar surroundings in front of a partisan crowd, and are less likely to be distracted by nearby attractions.

The Nittany Lions may have seen too much of the nearby attractions. Nobody can blame anyone from Pennsylvania for wanting to spend some extra time in South Florida, but Joe Paterno admits to second-guessing a decision to bring his team to Florida on December 20th. ''I think we came too early,'' Paterno said. ''I'm a little nervous. This is as long as we've ever been at a bowl site. We have not practiced well the last two days.”

JoePa has good reason to be nervous according to a PRO INFO SPORTS College Bowl POWER SYSTEM. Bowl favorites of 11 points or less/pick ‘em off…(*CLASSIFIED CLIENT INFO*)…are 0-15 ATS since 1989, failing to cover the spread by more than 10 points a game on average. After having lost his most recent Bowl matchup with Bowden, Paterno also knows that it won’t be easy this time, either, as revealed by another POWER SYSTEM. Bowl favorites of more than 1 point…(*CLASSIFIED CLIENT INFO*)…are 0-13 ATS since 1998, failing to cover the spread by nearly 13 points a game on average.

The Nittany Lions are without question the better team in the Orange Bowl and will likely win the game SU; however, most of the technical numbers and intangibles favor the big underdogs here, so we’ll favor the Seminoles to at least cover the spread.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: PENN STATE 16 FLORIDA STATE 10

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: PENN STATE 26 FLORIDA STATE 23 (3 OT)
