MAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
2 STAR SELECTION (2.5% of Bankroll) – Akron +13 over Northern Illinois
1 STAR SELECTION (2% of Bankroll) – Akron vs. Northern Illinois OVER 52
Due to some unexpected end-of-the-season outcomes, two first-time participants will battle for the MAC Championship Thursday night at Ford Field in Detroit. The Zips won their first-ever East Division title after going back and forth between wins and losses for the majority of the season. They closed out their 2005 campaign with three victories in their final four games, including an impressive 35-3 win over Kent State on Thanksgiving. As for the Huskies, they opened their season with three losses in their first four games, but rebounded in a huge way, knocking off six of its next seven opponents, including a dominating 42-7 victory over Western Michigan last Wednesday.
These two teams met earlier this season, with Akron posting a thrilling 48-42 overtime victory. In that contest, Northern Illinois took an early 14-0 lead, but the Zips came roaring back and went ahead by a whopping 42-21 margin. With the final quarter to play, the Huskies mounted a tremendous comeback, scoring three fourth-quarter touchdowns sending the matchup into overtime. Akron ultimately won 48-42, and we could very well see an exciting, close, high-scoring contest here again.
The Zips have not been overwhelming offensively this season, but the unit has been efficient enough to reach the title game. Akron is averaging 22 ppg behind a respectable 362 ypg, with the passing game doing most of the work. TB Brett Biggs has collected an impressive 1,114 yards and nine scores on 250 carries for a 4.5 ypc. QB Luke Getsy has been very effective, averaging 235 ypg while tossing 18 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. The Zips defense is the main reason they are in the MAC Championship Game, holding opponents to just under 23 ppg behind a meager 322 total ypg. Akron is allowing just 134 ypg on the ground and a paltry 188 ypg through the air. Linebacker Jay Rohr leads the Zips with 104 tackles and 11 TFLs, and has been the heart and soul of the strong unit throughout the season.
Northern Illinois has had one of the more efficient offensive unit in the MAC over the past couple seasons and this year's squad is no different as the Huskies lead the MAC in total offense, averaging nearly 33 ppg behind a whopping 457 ypg. The Huskies have been able to hurt its opponents with the run as well as the pass, churning out an impressive 200+ ypg on the ground, while throwing for 249 ypg. Leading the ground attack for the Huskies has been Garrett Wolfe, who is posting 164 ypg. Wolfe has been nothing short of spectacular this season, rushing for over 1,300 yards and 14 scores on just 200 attempts for a 6.6 ypg. Phil Horvath started the season and was having a sensational year before suffering a season-ending season against Central Michigan. Redshirt freshman Dan Nicholson finished that game, leading Northern to a crucial win on the road, and then managed the offense with big wins over Toledo and Western Michigan. The Huskies defense has been strong as well, allowing just 22 ppg behind just 357 total yards per contest, doing a solid job against both the pass and the run.
This is a classic match-up of a top-ranked defense against a top-ranked offense, as Akron has the MAC’s best stop unit, while Northern Illinois boasts the best offensive unit in the conference. In such a matchup, a big underdog that plays defense is usually a spread winner. Other indicators also point to the Zips covering this double-digit line. Covering a spread of nearly 2 TDs is quite a weight for a team that has never played in a conference championship game. Additionally, the Huskies played in a bowl game last year without winning the MAC and know they are likely bowl bound even with a defeat here. On the other hand, it’s likely the last game for the Zips with a loss. With a win, they’ll return as the MAC representative in the Motor City Bowl. Akron also comes in with the confidence of knowing they beat the Huskies earlier in the year, in a game that was a blowout before Northern scored 3 late TDs to force OT. In Conference Championship and Bowl games since 1980, teams playing revenge for an OT loss are 0-2 ATS, failing to cover by more than 18 points a game on average! Both teams come in off a couple of spread wins of more than a TD, which favors an underdog, but not a favorite according to previous similar situations. Finally, sub-.750% Conference Championship underdogs of 4½-21½ points are 7-0 ATS all-time, in the limited number of such games, covering the spread by nearly 13 points a game on average.
In looking at the TOTAL for this game, many signs point to a high-scoring contest. As noted, these teams put 90 points on the board when they played earlier in the season. Over the last three meetings, the teams have combined to score nearly 82 points a game on average. Additionally, all MAC games played at Ford Field have been high-scoring. Another 90 points was scored in a 44-36 win earlier this season when Western Michigan beat Eastern Michigan. Last year, a whopping 119 points were scored in a wild 61-58 Eastern Michigan victory here over Central Michigan. Last year’s MAC Championship game was a 35-27 win by Toledo, also at Ford Field. High-scoring MAC title games are nothing new, as previously Miami, Ohio beat Bowling Green 49-27 in 2003, Marshall downed Toledo 49-45 in 2002, and Toledo defeated Marshall 41-36 in 2001. All of those scores are well over the posted TOTAL for this contest, and we look for both offenses to have success here in ideal playing conditions.

Saturday’s FREE NCAA Football Selection
Army vs. Navy OVER 50½
The Commander in Chief Trophy is up for grabs on Saturday, as one of the great college football traditions is renewed with the Army-Navy game. The Midshipmen have won the last 3 matchups, but the Knights enter the game on a roll, winners of their last four games. Navy has also played well of late, winning two of its last three games.
The Middies run a very effective option-style offense that is averaging a healthy 288 rushing ypg. On the defensive side of the ball is where Navy is a bit vulnerable, allowing 26 ppg and 362 total ypg. The team has had some problems against the run and has forced few turnovers.
After a dismal start, Army has really turned things around on offense in recent weeks, and is now averaging 20 ppg. The real story is how their scoring output has increased in each of their last 5 games, going from 10 points to 17, 20, 27, 34, and 38 points in successive games. In the team's last game, Army racked up 377 total yards, including an impressive 300 rushing yards, in the 38-10 win over Arkansas State. The Army defense has improved over the last few weeks as well, but is still giving up over 25 ppg.
Both teams come into this game playing well, especially on offense. Army has had a very hard time trying to stop the Navy option game allowing 58, 34, and 42 points in the last 3 years. This year, Army should be much more competitive, at least on offense. While this game is often played in the snow or sub-zero conditions, the weather should be decent and not hinder the offenses. We look for both teams to move the ball and put points on the board, pushing this game OVER the TOTAL.
