5 Units on Los Angeles Lakers -5½ -110
Los Angeles ended San Antonio's season each of the last two years. Now the Spurs are halfway to ending the Lakers' dynasty. The Spurs bring a 2-0 lead to Staples Center for Friday's game against the Lakers, who didn't face the kind of trouble in their run of three straight championships that they face now. For the first time since Phil Jackson became coach in 1999, the Lakers trail a playoff series by more than one game. Then again, Los Angeles has rarely looked as overmatched as it did in Wednesday night's 114-95 loss. The Spurs shot 56 percent from the field, 57.1 percent from 3-point range, and held Los Angeles to 45 percent in a game that saw most of the stars spend most of the fourth quarter on the bench. Still, San Antonio doesn't expect the rest of the series to be as easy as it was Wednesday. ``This is a championship basketball team and they're a championship team because of their continual winning spirit.'' Bowen said. ``When they go on the road and their backs are against the wall they come out fighting, and we have to take that type of mentality of saying that we still have to continue to do work here. ``It's not over with. That's our main focus, that we stay focused mentally and understand that they've been here before and we haven't.'' Still, San Antonio is in a much better position. The Spurs are healthier and deeper, which is putting a strain on Lakers stars Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. The Spurs know they will almost surely win easily if they contain both those players. But even if league MVP Tim Duncan has an average game - he scored only 12 points Wednesday - San Antonio could still win by getting contributions from its role players.

    5 Units on Atlanta Braves -1½ +115 (Foppert - R, Maddux - R)
The defending NL champion Giants won their fifth in row Thursday, 3-2 over the slumping Florida Marlins, and are off to their best start through 33 games since 1971. ``We're all doing what we're capable of doing,'' said reliever Joe Nathan, who gave up his first run of the season but still earned the win. ``We're relaxed and having fun, and the pitchers are comfortable the offense is going to be there when you need it.'' Pinch-hitter Rich Aurilia singled home the winning run in the ninth, and closer Tim Worrell pitched a perfect ninth for his 11th save in 12 chances. He got a save in all three games against the Marlins. Meanwhile, the Braves took a doubleheader from the Colorado Rockies on Thursday, beating them 12-6 in the first game and 5-2 in the second. The 11-time defending NL East champions have won four in a row and are 19-3 since losing eight of their first 12 games. The Braves won for the 67th straight game in which closer John Smoltz has appeared. Smoltz picked up a save in both games, and has converted 15 of 16 chances.

    1 Unit on Oakland Athletics -129 (Weaver - R, Hudson -R)
After opening the season in a hideous slump, the star shortstop looks to continue his resurgence when the Oakland Athletics open a three-game series against the New York Yankees at Network Associates Coliseum. Tejada edged out Texas' Alex Rodriguez and the Yankees' Alfonso Soriano for the AL MVP Award last season, hitting .308 with 30 doubles, 34 homers and 131 RBIs while leading the A's to the AL West title. But until recently he had not picked up where he left off last season. Playing through the final year of his contract and the likelihood this is his last season in Oakland, Tejada opened the year batting a paltry .157 over his first 26 games with four homers and 13 RBIs. However, he is beginning to flash the form that helped the A's win 103 games last season. Tejada launched a three-run homer Thursday among his three hits in an 8-5 win over the Chicago White Sox. Eric Chavez also homered, and Ramon Hernandez and Erubiel Durazo had RBI doubles as the A's won for the 10th time in their last 13.
