4 Units on New Jersey Nets -7½ -110
Last season, the Nets defeated the Celtics, 4-2, to reach the NBA Finals for the first time. New Jersey then was swept by the Los Angeles Lakers in the championship round. The lower-seeded Celtics took Games Two and Three last season to grab a brief 2-1 lead, but the Nets closed out the series with three straight wins. Second-seeded New Jersey advanced to the conference semifinals with a six-game victory over Milwaukee. On Thursday, the Nets closed out the series with a 113-101 triumph at the Bradley Center as Kenyon Martin scored 29 points and Jason Kidd contributed 22, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Sixth-seeded Boston also won its first-round series in six games, finishing off third-seeded Indiana with a 110-90 romp at home on Thursday. Paul Pierce scored 27 points and Antoine Walker 21 for the Celtics, who led by double digits the final 40 minutes. The Nets won three of four against the Celtics this season, including both games here.

    3 Units on Los Angeles Lakers O 191 -110
The Spurs swept their four meetings with the three-time defending champions this season, including the two games at their new arena, though the Lakers were missing Shaquille O'Neal for two of the matchups. In the final meeting in the regular season, Tim Duncan had 27 points and 17 rebounds and Tony Parker added 18 points as the Spurs posted a 98-89 victory here on March 23. That game started a season-ending 10-game winning streak, which vaulted the Spurs past the Dallas Mavericks for the top seed in the West. "This is the regular season, not the playoffs, so this loss is not a big deal," O'Neal said after that loss. "We just need to get everyone clicking and we'll be fine. We've been making too many mistakes down the stretch. We have a lot of opportunities, but were too many mistakes." The fifth-seeded Lakers were clicking in their first-round series as the ousted the fourth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves in six games. Los Angeles has bounced San Antonio from the postseason the last two campaigns, including a 4-1 victory in the conference semifinals last season. The Lakers have won six of their eight all-time playoff series against the Spurs. San Antonio last beat Los Angeles in the postseason in 1999, when they went 4-1 in this round en route to winning the NBA title.

    2 Units on Philadelphia Phillies -1½ +150 (Padilla - R, Batista - R)
With another starting pitcher injured, the Arizona Diamondbacks will again turn to Miguel Batista in the opener of their three-game series against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. Byung-Hyun Kim was supposed to start Monday but a bruised right ankle forced him out as the right-hander became the third Arizona starting pitcher to go on the disabled list this season. Kim was injured April 15 when he was hit by the barrel of Colorado's Preston Wilson's broken bat. Batista, who is awaiting an appeal hearing of his 10-game suspension for his role in an April 20 brawl with St. Louis' first baseman Tino Martinez, will pitch a day earlier than scheduled. The Diamondbacks got Curt Schilling back from the DL on Saturday, but are still without reigning NL Cy Young winner Randy Johnson, who is sidelined for at least another three to five weeks after arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. Batista, normally a reliever, moved into the rotation on April 16 due to injuries. The right-hander boasts a 1.57 ERA in his four spot starts this season, with Arizona going 3-1, including Wednesday's 7-3 home victory over Florida. Batista allowed one run on six hits over seven innings for his first win as a starter this season.

    4 Units on Baltimore Orioles -210 (Cornejo - R, Johnson - R)
Scratched from his scheduled start against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday because of a cracked callous on his middle finger, Johnson will take the hill looking to match his entire win total from last year. Johnson can join Mike Mussina, Esteban Loaiza and Barry Zito as pitchers who have at least five wins. Woody Williams of the St. Louis Cardinals can also reach five wins on Monday. Last season, Johnson went 5-14 in 22 starts with a 5.33 ERA. ``I feel not too much different from last season,'' Johnson said. ``I have a lot more self-confidence out on the mound pitching. Last year I had really good stuff, too. I just kind of ran into a wall. This year, everything's going my way so far.'' Johnson beat the Tigers his last time out, 11-3 on Tuesday at Comerica Park. The 29-year-old right-hander, who didn't get his fourth win in 2002 until Aug. 15, gave up two hits, walked one and struck out two in five innings. The Orioles dropped two of three over the weekend to the Kansas City Royals, including a 4-0 defeat on Sunday. Eric DuBose, recalled from Triple-A Ottawa before the game, allowed two runs and three hits over 6 1-3 innings in his first major league start. The Tigers, meanwhile, will look to win consecutive games for the first time this season. Detroit ended its six-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Sunday. Carlos Pena hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the sixth inning as Detroit won for only the fourth time in 29 games this season. The Tigers set a season high for runs and avoided the worst 29-game start in major league history. Baltimore of the American Association opened 3-26 in 1882.
