    Wednesday’s client-only

    Opinion Selection

NORTHERN ILLINOIS -2½ over Miami, Ohio

It will be a showcase of MAC offenses on Wednesday, as Miami, Ohio visits Northern Illinois. The RedHawks have two of the top 10 receivers in the Mid-American Conference. So does Northern Illinois. The RedHawks have the MAC’s third-leading rusher. The Huskies have the MAC’s leading rusher. The RedHawks rank third in the MAC in total offense. The Huskies rank first. This is a game that should involve lots of yardage, TDs and two teams in the same boat. Miami, a conference contender that lost a shootout to Central Michigan 38-37 last month, can’t afford another loss. Neither can NIU, a conference contender that lost a shootout to Akron 48-42 in overtime last month.

The Huskies hope to get a big game out of junior tailback Garrett Wolfe, who ran for 1,656 yards in 2004 and leads the MAC this year with 126.5 rushing yards per game. QB Phil Horvath has completed 70% of his passes for 1,187 yards, 11 TDs and four interceptions. Miami’s Josh Betts has completed 95-of-162 passes for 1,255 yards, nine TDs and three interceptions.

While we backed Miami, Ohio at home in last week’s Wednesday MAC game, we are going to fade them here. They were in a very favorable spot against a cupcake opponent; however, that is not the case here. Ever since “Big Ben” Roethilsberger left for the NFL, the RedHawks have been unable to compete against similar or superior competition, as they are 0-6 SU & ATS in games not favored by more than 5 points over the past 2 season. They have not even come close to the spread, failing to cover by more than 15 points a game on average.

This is a must-win game for the Huskies and we look for them to respond with a strong performance, especially with the extra time off. They have done well at home in primetime under Joe Novak, going 3-0 SU & ATS when not favored by 7+ points in these special non-Saturday games, while Miami, Oh is the exact opposite, 0-2 SU & ATS in non-Saturday road games when not favored by a TD. In all non-neutral, non-Saturday games, the RedHawks are 0-5 SU & ATS, failing to cover by more than 2 TDs a game on average. While we don’t expect a blowout here, we do like Northern Illinois to come away with a close SU & ATS win.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: NORTHERN ILLINOIS 35 MIAMI, OH 31

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: NORTHERN ILLINOIS 38 MIAMI, OH 27

    Thursday’s FREE Opinion Selection

    Florida Atlantic +6 over LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE

Sun Belt Conference play opens for Louisiana-Lafayette on Thursday night when they host Florida Atlantic. The visiting Owls are still looking for their first win of the season after playing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation. As for the Ragin' Cajuns, their lone victory of the season was over Division I-AA Northwestern State. Last week the Cajuns fell just short against Central Florida, as the Golden Knights got a last-second field goal to win 24-21.

The Owls have struggled tremendously on offense this season, but they should fare much better against their Sun Belt brothers, led by QB Danny Embick. The Cajuns will be without their starting QB for this game, as Jerry Babb went down very early last Saturday. Babb tossed just three passes in the game and gave way to Michael Desormeaux, who finished the contest just 14-of-26 for 119 yards and two interceptions. Although Desormeaux struggled under center, he was able to rack up 76 yards on 17 carries.

With their non-conference schedule now complete, Florida Atlantic is very excited about battling Sunbelt Conference foes the rest of the season. "We are very capable of winning our conference and that goal is definitely still in sight," Embick said.

Louisiana-Lafayette have struggled greatly in this role. They are an awful 0-10-1 ATS as a conference favorite of more than 2 points going back to 1995. A PRO INFO SPORTS NCAA Football Power System also indicates that the Cajuns will have a hard time bouncing back off Saturday’s tough loss. In Games 1-11, non-Saturday conference favorites are 0-11 ATS since 1997, failing to cover by nearly 11 points a game on average.

This figures to be a tight game, with Louisiana-Lafayette missing Babb, and the Owls taking advantage, so we’ll take the points and Florida Atlantic to at least cover the spread.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE 20 FLORIDA ATLANTIC 17
