Houston +12½ over UTEP
Two teams that figure to battle for the Conference USA championship meet up in El Paso’s Sun Bowl on Friday when the UTEP Miner host the Houston Cougars. UTEP is one of the new teams to join the league this season, and were a preseason favorite to win the league title. They got off to a solid start with a 34-17 victory over New Mexico State two weeks ago. Houston has played 2 games, losing to Oregon at their home-away-from-home in Reliant Stadium, but bounced back this past weekend with a 31-10 triumph over 1-AA Sam Houston State.
Houston runs a wide-open spread attack on offense, but they have a solid running game as well. Quarterback Kevin Kolb started as a true freshman 2 years ago and led his team to a bowl game. They were home for the holidays last year, but are hungry to go bowling again this season. The Miners are explosive on offense themselves, led by QB Jordan Palmer, the younger brother of former Heisman Trophy winner Carson, who now plays on Sundays for the Cincinnati Bengals. Running back Tyler Ebell, a transfer from UCLA, figures to carry the rushing load for the team this season.
An area that once looked like a strength has suddenly become a big concern for UTEP. They had hoped that their injury-riddled defensive line would be healthier with the extra time off; however, that is not the case. Now, the Miners ability to counter Houston's offense and QB Kolb will be tested by the absence of three key defensive linemen, starters Zach West and Joe Ward and junior reserve Ricky Van. Coach Mike Price said the starting defensive line will most likely be right end Reggie Miles, right tackle Justin Hanel, left tackle Chris Mineo and left end Alex Obomese, even though Obomese didn't practice last week with knee and ankle problems of his own. With these inexperience replacements, Houston’s massive offensive line with outweigh UTEP’s front 4 by 50 lbs. a man on average. This is a HUGE advantage for the Cougars because if they can have success running the ball behind their behemoths, it will make their offense all the more unpredictable and dangerous.
Additionally, it will help them sustain drives, which means Jordan and the Miners’ offense will be kept off the field.
Mike Price may have also let some over-confidence show in recent comments: "I know it's on a Friday. I know it's a little earlier. But we need to do everything we can to get people here and support this team. It will be a big win for us, on national television, and will help recruiting for athletes and students when they see the excitement of playing a game at UTEP." Most coaches don’t proclaim a victory as a statement of fact before the game is played. We think he’ll be unpleasantly surprised by a Cougars team that will refuse to go away. UTEP allowed 17 unanswered, late points at New Mexico State in their first game, so even a big lead late in this game could evaporate to allow for a back-door cover. Ultimately, we expect this game to be a back-and-forth affair with the teams trading big plays and TDs. The Miners may survive to get the SU victory, we look for Houston to hang tough and stay within a TD to cover the spread.

TEXAS A&M -27½ over SMU
Off a huge victory over then nationally ranked TCU last week, Southern Methodist pays a visit to Texas A&M on Saturday. The Mustangs beat their hated local rival 21-10, while the Aggies were taking the week off after a 25-24 loss at Clemson.
SMU figures to fall prey to the same letdown that the Horned Frogs did off their monumental victory at Oklahoma. After a team pulls a major upset, especially a down-trodden program, much of the following week is spent celebrating the glorious victory. The win over TCU was basically the Mustangs’ bowl game, as they know they will be home for the holidays. They aren’t likely to have a better performance or bigger victory this season. SMU did more than just snap a six-game losing streak in its rivalry with TCU. It was the first win over a ranked opponent in 20 seasons! Off its peak performance of the year, a team can be expected to let down. The players subconsciously know that they just played their best game of the season and will be hard-pressed to match that emotion, effort, and intensity next time out. "I can't speak for everybody who's been here, but I know it's the biggest win since I've been here, and that's all I'm concerned about," said coach Phil Bennett, who is 7-30 in his fourth season at SMU. "We've been here four years and it's our first marquee win."
Texas A&M won’t be taking anyone lightly this week, as they will be all business. The team went from being the 17th-ranked program in the nation to just another squad in the Big 12 following its one-point loss to the Tigers in the opener. A&M has had plenty of time to reflect on the loss, so we look for Reggie McNeal and company to come out strong and make a statement here. Getting a team with a lack of focus off a big upset win will play right into the hands of the determined Aggies.
SMU is 0-4 ATS over the past 10 years as a home favorite/pick or road underdog off its first win of the season as a home/neutral site underdog, demonstrating their inability for back-to-back solid games. Meanwhile, Texas A&M is a perfect 9-0 SU/ATS as a home favorite with 13+ days rest since 1992.
