Game: Iowa at Iowa State
Sport: NCAA - National Collegiate Athletic Association
Line: Iowa State +9 -110
Prediction: Iowa State +9 -110
Explanation: 2 Units
Iowa could not have looked better last week, running the football, passing the football, shutting down Ball St defensively and making big plays on special teams. We say, great! Ball St might be the weakest team in all of college football, and they didn’t show any heart after 13 players were suspended in a massive scandal the day before the game. But the public saw Iowa dominate, and this line will continue to be bet up – no rush to bet the underdog here.
Comparing last week’s dominance at home against Ball St to this week’s battle against the Cyclones in Iowa City is like comparing apples and oranges. This has been an extraordinarily competitive series in recent years. The Hawkeyes lost five straight meetings with the Cyclones between ’98 and ’02, three of them as favorites. Five of the last six meetings have been decided by single digit margins, and we firmly expect Iowa St to go off as a 10 point underdog or higher.
Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz is the ‘genius de jour’, the latest hot coaching prospect out of the collegiate ranks. But look closely at Iowa’s road record during their last two years of dominance. In ’03, they lost at Michigan St, Ohio St and Purdue, while winning at Wisconsin by six. In ’04 they lost at Arizona St, at Michigan, beat Penn St and Minnesota by two points each, and failed to cover as double digit chalk at Illinois. We’re not seeing a lot of road blowouts here, folks, and that’s what they’ll need to do in order to cover this inflated pointspread.
Iowa St missed out on a Big 12 North championship by a missed field goal at the end of their final regular season game last year. They’ve been to four bowl games in the last five years, and look poised to make another run at a Big 12 North championship in ’05. They’ve got a returning quarterback in Bret Meyer, a workhorse running back in Stevie Hicks and more talent on the offensive line and at the receiver positions than they’ve had in decades. Their starting secondary is a veteran unit, and their defensive line has three starters back from a unit that improved dramatically as the season went along in ’04. Not going to call for the outright upset here, but this game should be decided by a TD or less, just like last year’s game was.
