Oregon travels to Houston in what is termed as a neutral site game but it is being held at Reliant Stadium in Houston so in reality, it is a home game for the Cougars. Both teams are coming off disappointing seasons last year and both will be looking to start the 2005 campaign on the right foot. Oregon is one of the most inexperienced teams in the country and while the skill positions are in place, the weakness for the Ducks is where it matters most in the early part of the season.
The offensive line for Oregon was a huge question mark coming into this season and it keeps getting worse. The line lost three starters and four seniors and with six of the 10 players in the two-deep chart being freshmen and sophomores, there will be struggles. Junior right guard Shawn Flanagan, the projected starter at right guard, is out with an injured pectoral muscle. Junior center Enoka Lucas is the only experienced starter without any lingering or current issues going on.
For Houston, third year coach Art Briles has loads of talent returning from a team that went 3-8 last year. Every skill player who contributed in 2004 is back. Signal caller Kevin Kolb is now in his third year as a starter at Houston and could be on the verge of a spectacular season. He led Conference USA with 256.5 yards per game of total offense last season. Senior receiver Vincent Marshall caught 61 balls for 1,040 yards and five TD’s while running back Anthony Evans rushed for 744 yards and has four TD’s.
The Cougars averaged 24.7 ppg in their final six games and they hope to build from that heading into this season. Injuries took their toll last season and this team is very healthy heading into the opener. Oregon’s defense is not projected to be very stout this season. This is not an aggressive styled defense and with linebacker position being very thin and the worst in the conference, that probably won’t change. The secondary will have help with a rover and it is an experienced group that needs to make plays.
Now that the Ducks are employing more of a spread offense, teams with fast linebackers and a penchant for stunts and differing blitz packages could give them problems. The Cougars are switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 alignment this year. The new Houston defense emphasizes speed to the ball with a lot new blitz and pressure packages and will give the Ducks some trouble. This is going to be a speedy unit and it will be up to the experienced secondary to maintain consistency.
Oregon bottomed out last year with their first losing season in 10 years after dropping their final three games including an embarrassing loss to rival Oregon St. This team will get better as the season progresses and the offensive line gets more time spent together. Houston is coming into this game a very confident team. An outright win is very possible but we’ll take the points nonetheless.
