College football is quickly approaching and BIG BOARD SPORTS is ready. Last season we boldly predicted, ”California will go 9-2 and go to a major bowl.” We have made our calls to our contacts, studied the trends and statistics, and now we are prepared to give our football predictions for the coming season. We know that our readers know about USC, Texas, and the other big name squads. We will discuss our own personal sleepers and disappointments for the upcoming 2005 season.
SLEEPERS
1. Colorado State- The Rams will go 8-3 and go to a top bowl. With 17 starters, and the best young offensive line in the Mt West Conference, Colorado State will bounce back big time behind Coach Sonny Lubick and senior QB Justin Holland. Lubick’s Rams are 38-12 with a senior incumbent QB. This year will be no different as the Rams rally for 8 wins.
2. Alabama- The Tide will surprise everyone in the SEC. We look for Alabama to win the close games this year and will be 4-0 when they face Florida on October 1. Forced to play young players in 2004 due to numerous injuries, Brodie Croyle will lead the Tide to a 9-2 season including a decisive win over Auburn in the big final game.
3. Colorado – The Buffaloes will score points aplenty in 2005. Led by underrated QB Joel Klatt the Colorado offense will be the most explosive in the BIG 12 North. With 10 defensive starters and an explosive off-season strength program, the Buffaloes will be just as formidable on “D”. Look for another 8 win season for Coach Gary Barnett
DISAPPOINTMENTS
1. Syracuse- Greg Robinson brings an NFL approach to the Orangemen. Normally that would mean good news, but not with this squad. Perry Patterson is just not cut out to be a pocket passer. We look for the Orangemen to follow Nebraska’s path of 2004.
2. Hawaii- The Warriors must replace the NCAA’s all-time career leading passer and 26 lost lettermen, most in the league. They host Boise State and Fresno State this season, but there appears to be a huge gap between the Warriors and the big two this year. Look for a long season for Coach June Jones and the Rainbow Warriors.
3. Troy State- Only 8 starters return for the Trojans, and with a tough non-conference schedule, they will look nothing like the 2004 squad. Larry Blakeney will have to win games with mirrors this year and that is asking too much with the Trojan’s schedule.
