NFLX WEEK 3 REVIEW
Once again, the Dog Days of August were ruled by the dogs in the NFL, as in Week 3 of the exhibition season they went 11-4-1 ATS (depending on when you placed your wagers).
Atlanta kicked off the week last Thursday in Jacksonville and pulled off the outright upset as a small underdog, and the wet weather helped keep the game under the posted total. The Falcons have taken a completely different approach to the preseason this year, as they have let QB Michael Vick see extended time.
The mother lode of games came on Friday, and we finally saw some games that looked like ideal investment opportunities for our clients. We made the Baltimore Ravens only our second 5 STAR SELECTION of the preseason, and they we rewarded us with an easy SU & ATS win. Evidently, many other last-minute bettors also jumped on Baltimore, as they line swung in the final hours before kickoff, actually making the Ravens a slight favorite. As we stated in our analysis:
“In handicapping NFL exhibition games, it is very important to look at how the respective top two units played in their previous game. If a veteran first unit was dominated, there is a great chance they will have a fire lit under them. For the record, the Eagles' starters defeated the Ravens' starters 17-0 last week. Billick and his boys are determined for a much better showing this time out, and they are catching the Saints at the perfect time.”
Baltimore got an early TD run from Chester Taylor and the rout was on.
Our second-highest-rated play on Friday was the surprising Cleveland Browns. Being a big underdog at home off 2 SU dog wins against a team coming off a loss to snap a long preseason winning streak was too much to resist. Despite how well Carolina plays in the preseason, they had no business being a 5½-6 point favorite on the road. When we look at a game, we handicap the line as well as the teams. One method we use to determine if a line is off or not, is to switch home and visitor times and give the spread a 6-point swing, figuring home field advantage is worth about 3 points. In this case, if the Panthers had been the home team and 6 points were added to the spread, that would have made them an 11½-12 point home favorite! That is one reason why this line jumped out at us as being off, which it obviously was, and we made the Browns a 4 STAR SELECTION. We also noted:
“The Panthers ten straight exhibition wins came to an end last week, so we expect a bit of a letdown here, as they won’t have quite as much to play for. They certainly aren’t feeling any pressure for a stellar performance, as head coach John Fox has not found much to complain about. “I told them this is as good a camp as I’ve been associated with,” Fox said. “We might have had one bad practice in 39. Guys worked really hard, and we got better.” Fox was so pleased with his team, he ended training camp early.”
When a coach says he is very pleased with his team’s effort in camp and lets them out early, you have a team primed for an unfocused effort, especially if they are a favorite. NFL players HATE training camp, and when they get out, it’s like kids getting out of school. They think it’s time to relax a bit, especially if they hear what “a great camp they had” and are “ready for the regular season”. Why go out and bust your hump for a practice game?
Saturday was another winning day for PRO INFO SPORTS clients, as we won 3 of 4, including another 5 STAR SELECTION. Our one loser was on Kansas City. We were under the impression that the Chiefs first-string offense was in for a lot of work against the Seahawks, but Dick Vermeil pulled most of his starters after 2 series, while Mike Holmgren played his first unit into the 3rd quarter. Still, KC had a chance to win the game at the end, although they still would not have covered the spread.
On Monday, our clients enjoyed yet another winner with St. Louis overwhelming the Lions. While we were surprised that Detroit did not give a better effort in the first half, we knew the Rams would come to play:
“St. Louis will certainly be looking for a stronger defensive effort than they displayed in last week’s embarrassing loss in San Diego. Mike Martz’s team surrendered 215 rushing yards and three ground touchdowns to the Chargers. Needless to say, Martz is not happy. "There are a lot of defensive positions that aren't safe - probably half of them," he said. "We're not competing on defense like we should or can. I'm not very happy with that. So we'll have to see some sort of change there." Martz is known to take it easy on his players during the week, so as to not bang them up before a game; however, Friday's practice included a rare live tackling session featuring the first-team defense. Without question, Martz means business, and his team, especially the defense should respond. This is similar to last year during the exhibition season when St. Louis was embarrassed by the Chiefs in Kansas City in a nationally televised Monday Night game. Martz cracked the whip for the next several days and the Rams responded by scalping the Redskins 28-3.”
As Yogi Berra might say, “It was déjà vu all over again”, as St. Louis pushed the Lions all over the field for one of the biggest blowouts of this NFL exhibition season.
Overall, PRO INFO SPORTS clients enjoyed a tremendous week, as we won 63% of our selections, including ALL of our highest-rated plays for a nice bankroll bump
Even our non-playing customers enjoyed nothing but winners this past week, as our FREE selections were Washington over Pittsburgh on Friday, Denver over Indianapolis on Saturday.
