It’s time to win. The Lions have dropped their first two preseason games and all of the talk about Detroit being a contender needs to be backed up starting Monday. The national TV spotlight in on the Lions and they want to prove they belong and there isn’t a better place to start than here. Detroit is not going to unveil its new offense until the regular season but with veterans Joey Harrington and Jeff Garcia getting most of the snaps, the offense is going to produce.
Even in the losses, the offense has been efficient, as the Lions have failed to gain a first down on only two possessions in the first two games with Harrington or Garcia at QB. Harrington`s performance in the first two exhibition games has removed any doubt that he is the starting quarterback. His 93.9 completion percentage is the highest among starting quarterbacks. He will play the entire first half against a Rams defense that has allowed 364.5 ypg in the first two games.
Against the run, the Rams defense gave up 215 yards on the ground to the Chargers and Detroit is allowing nearly two ypc less than what St. Louis is giving up. Detroit is allowing over 100 yards less per game in total defense and that is from a unit hasn’t even played to its potential yet. The Lions are getting into more of their regular routine and the starters will see extended playing time which should pick their game up even more. There will actually be a game plan going into the St. Louis matchup.
St. Louis looked good at times on offense last week against San Diego but the offensive line is still the weak link and this game will be the first that the starting unit will be playing together. “The biggest issue is the offensive line,” Martz said. “If the quarterback can`t throw it, it doesn`t make any difference who is out there.” Jamie Martin, who didn’t even play last week against San Diego, will be the main backup to Marc Bulger who is expected to play the entire first half.
The Rams have been in the spotlight a lot more than Detroit so a Monday night game isn’t really going to whet their palette too much. The Lions on the other hand are going to be extremely fired up and while it may sound insignificant to some, Detroit will be wearing its new black jerseys for the first time ever.
