Explanation: 2 Units
The Pittsburgh defense has looked great in the first two games of the preseason and now it’s time for the offense to pick things up and start showing some production. The defense has allowed just 17 ppg and the rushing defense has been stout, giving up only 57.5 ypg on 3.7 ypc. Washington has now shown thus far that it will be able to find success against that rushing defense as it has averaged just 84.5 ypg on the ground. The defense has forced 10 turnovers in the two games.
The Redskins defense has not been as efficient, allowing 26 ppg and the biggest problem seems to be up front. Carolina and Cincinnati combined for 14 rushing first downs, 51.6 third-down efficiency and 115.5 rushing ypg. The first defense will play into the third quarter this week. “That`s the bad news,” Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Blache said. “Friday night will be a big test for us because we`ll play the first group for a long time and see what they can do against a team that was 15-1 last year. The Steelers have manhandled people on the field [this preseason].”
Steelers head coach Bill Cowher expects more out of his top offensive unit Friday night. He hasn’t been pleased with the production but he says that it comes down to reps and the offense hasn’t had much time on the field together in game situations. Ben Roethlisberger will play the entire first half while Tommy Maddox will open the second half at quarterback and “we`ll see how it unfolds and how much Charlie and Brian St. Pierre play,” Cowher said.
Coach Joe Gibbs said he intends to split the snaps evenly among his top three quarterbacks during Friday`s preseason game meaning rookie Jason Campbell will play about a third of the game. He didn’t play at all last week against the Bengals. Maddux is better than all three so the Steelers have a huge edge in the quarterback rotations for Friday. Gibbs doesn’t like to lose in the preseason either but it doesn’t set up very well for him to get the win as his team is simply very bad right now. Play Pittsburgh Steelers
