Game: Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies 7:05 p.m. ET
Sport: MLB - Major League Baseball
Line: Washington Nationals (Loaiza) +131
Prediction: Washington Nationals (Loaiza) +131
Explanation: 1 Unit
Arms Must Start: Washington - Esteban Loaiza /Philadelphia - Jon Lieber
Washington is scoring runs again and it couldn’t have come at a better time, as the Nationals are right in the think of the wild card race. They have won four straight games and have averaged exactly six rpg during their current road trip. Washington is winning games on the road again after two consecutive road trips of going 1-5 and 2-5. The Phillies have been up and down, winning 11 of their last 20 games which isn’t horrible but it isn’t great either.
Esteban Loaiza has looked very solid over the last two months as he has an ERA of 3.04 in July and August covering eight starts. Four of those outings have been on the road where he has an even better ERA of 2.96 and a WHIP of 1.34. Washington had dropped his last four starts prior to getting a win in Colorado in his last outing so getting that win can be a big boost in his confidence as well. He has faced the Phillies three times this year and has pitched good enough to get the win each time.
The Phillies would like to get another strong performance from Jon Lieber as he has put together two consecutive strong outings. The problem is that he has not put together three straight quality starts since May 7th when he strung together seven straight to start the season. It likely isn’t going to happen in this spot as he has a 5.11 ERA at home and has just five quality starts in 12 games. He isn’t getting great run support either as the offense has scored three runs or less in nine of his last 12 starts.
Washington has done most of its damage against right-handed starters, going 46-36 on the season and netting just over 14.1 units. The bullpen continues to shine with a 3.90 ERA on the season and 1.12 ERA in the last 10 games. Neither offense is hitting the ball particularly well as far as average goes but Washington is putting more runs on the board as the Phillies have averaged a mere 3.3 rpg over their last 12 home games. Washington has the important edges and takes Game 3 on Wednesday. Play Washington Nationals One
Predicted Final: Washington Nationals 5 Philadelphia Phillies 4
