2 Units on Boston Red Sox
Game: Boston Red Sox at Chicago White Sox 3:05 p.m. ET
Sport: MLB - Major League Baseball
Line: Boston Red Sox (Arroyo) -109
Prediction: Boston Red Sox (Arroyo) -109
Explanation: 2 Unit Free Pick
Arms Must Start: Boston - Bronson Arroyo / Chicago - Jose Contreras
Boston was hurt by one bad inning on Friday, which snapped its seven game winning streak in Chicago. Boston is hitting .283 on the road this season, which is the second best average in baseball behind Baltimore. That includes a .284 average against right-handed pitching. The road team has now taken 12 of the last 15 meetings in this series, which isn’t good for Chicago who has dropped seven of its last nine home games.
Bronson Arroyo is coming off a solid effort against Tampa Bay and while it may not seem very impressive, it is a much needed confidence booster. He was hit hard in two of his previous four starts prior to that with both of those rough outings coming at Fenway Park. He has been solid on the road, going 2-0 with a 1.85 ERA in his last two road outings. He has allowed three runs or less in seven of his nine road starts and taking one bad outing at Wrigley away drops his road ERA from 3.68 to 2.80.
Jose Contreras has been the model of inconsistency this season and has had a lot of problems at home. He has a 4.92 ERA at home this season and after a great starts, he has cooled off considerably. After posting a 3.30 ERA through the first two months of the season, he has a 5.50 ERA in June and July and his WHIP has gone up from 1.12 to 1.50. It won’t get easier with the Red Sox in town as Boston has been a problem in his career. Contreras is 1-4 with a 13.50 ERA in five career starts.
Boston is looking to stay atop the division and the Red Sox are also out to take care of business against another division leader. They have the pitching advantage on Sunday and a pretty good one at that. In four July starts, Arroyo is 2-1 with a 3.49 ERA and that one bad start against the Cubs really shot his road ERA up. He should get another quality start against the White Sox offense that is hitting just .262 at home and .250 on the season against right handed pitching. This time, the Red sox play long ball. Play Boston Red Sox
Predicted Final: Boston Red Sox 7 Chicago White Sox 4
