Arms Must Start: Seattle - Aaron Sele / Toronto - Ted Lilly

It’s time for the Blue Jays to pick up the pieces from their rough stretch last week and move on in what is to be the turning point of the season. This series followed by one with Kansas City is the calm before the storm as the schedule toughens up. This could be the last chance to get back to .500. Seattle is seven games under .500 on the road and the Mariners have dropped seven of the last eight meetings in Toronto.

Ted Lilly has been nearly unhittable at home in recent starts. Even though he lost his last outing, he went seven innings allowing only two runs against Tampa Bay. Over his last six home starts, he is 5-1 with a 1.33 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. The first two months of his season are better off forgotten as he has posted a 3.06 ERA in June and July covering eight starts. He has never faced Seattle in Toronto.

Aaron Sele has been both bad and unlucky recently as he has not won since June 15th with Seattle going 0-5 in his last five starts. He was saddled with the loss in four of those games as he allowed four runs or more in three of those starts. Seattle scored three runs or less in four of those games, averaging only 2.6 runs per game during that five game span. Sele has had great success against Toronto but he hasn’t faced them since 2003.

Even though Toronto has struggled, the offense has been solid hitting .313 over the 10 games against right handed pitching and .288 on the season at home. Three of the last six losses for Toronto were the result of some questionable calls by the umpiring crew and while that normally evens out, the three instances directly affected the results of those games. It’s bound to turn around and with Lilly on the hill, it won’t even be an issue. Play Toronto Blue Jays
