Dirk Nowitzki scored 29 points and Steve Nash added 28 as Dallas won for the ninth time in its last 12 games. The Mavericks have won five of their last six road games and have the league's best road record at 23-11. They open a three-game road trip at Staples Center. Los Angeles has won seven of its last eight games and has pulled within 1 1/2 games of fifth-place Minnesota in the Western Conference. The Lakers are trying to win five in a row for the first time since a six-game run from February 18-27. Los Angeles opened a three-game homestand with a 115-113 overtime victory over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday. Kobe Bryant, who buried a game-winning jumper against Memphis on Saturday, made the game-tying shot with 14 seconds left in regulation and the go-ahead shot with 28 seconds remaining in overtime. Bryant collected 26 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and Shaquille O'Neal had 22 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and six blocks as the Lakers moved a season-high 15 games over .500. Los Angeles has won two of three meetings with Dallas this season, including a 105-103 victory at Staples Center on December 6. the Lakers are on a roll with a reputation to keep up, the mavs will lose tonight, du to the fact that the lakers have been kicking ass lately....and they'll do it again tonight!!

Utah has fallen one game behind the Los Angeles Lakers for sixth place in the Western Conference. It can become the seventh team to secure a playoff berth with a win or a loss by the Houston Rockets to Portland. The Jazz have lost two straight after winning eight of their previous nine and were handed an 82-80 loss by the Sonics on Sunday. Karl Malone scored 22 points, Matt Harpring added 16 and Greg Ostertag had 11 and 10 rebounds for Utah, which has split its last eight road games. Malone collected nine rebounds and six assists. He is two offensive rebounds shy of reaching 3,500 for his career. Golden State snapped a three-game losing streak with a 106-99 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday. With that overtime loss against the knicks the other day, the Jazz either one way or another will find the win their looking for tonight!

The Mets are coming off an 8-5 loss to the Expos on Sunday. New York carried a 5-4 lead into the ninth inning before closer Armando Benitez allowed four runs. Benitez gave up a three-run homer to Montreal's Jeff Liefer that cost the Mets the game. ``I'm human. He hit my best pitch,'' Benitez said of the 97-mph fastball that Liefer sent over the right-field wall. ``I was behind in the count. I had to come in with a strike.'' Benitez should be happy the Mets left for a 10-game road trip after the game, as he was booed relentlessly by New York fans during his ninth-inning blow-up. The Marlins come in with losses in five of their first seven games. Florida suffered a 3-0 loss to the Braves on Monday, completing their four-game series in Atlanta with three losses. Florida starter Carl Pavano brought a two-hit shutout into the sixth inning before allowing successive homers to Gary Sheffield, Chipper Jones, and Andruw Jones. ``I'd like to have those three pitches to take back, but you have to move on. I just left those pitches over the plate,'' Pavano said. ``I definitely felt good. You can't ask for more than that, but you can ask for a win.'' Pavano will get a chance to redeem himself next week, when the Marlins complete their six-game homestand with three games against the Braves. STANDINGS: Mets - 2nd place (tied), 1 GB, NL East. Marlins - 5th place, 2 1/2 GB, NL East. The Mets are looking to win this one tonight, they need this win!!
