NFL PRE-SEASON HANDICAPPING SECRETS - PART 1
PRO INFO SPORTS has quickly become the dominant Sports Investment Firm when it comes to NFL Pre-Season handicapping. While some so-called experts claim the NFL practice games are too unpredictable, we have mastered the art as demonstrated by our performance last year. PRO INFO SPORTS finished the 2004 NFL Pre-Season +55 STAR UNITS as our top-rated GAMEDAY INVESTMENT e-LERT selections sizzled at 15-4 (79%).
Now, we share some of our secrets.
Beating NFL exhibition games calls for very different tactics than beating regular season games. Wholly different conditions are in place. Most important of these different conditions is the fact that the primary goal of a coach in an NFL exhibition game is not necessarily to win the game - the primary goal of a coach in an exhibition game is to get ready to win during the regular season. Since the head coach decides every detail of how his team will play any particular exhibition game, from how important a win is to who will play and how long, the first and main factor to handicapping the preseason is handicapping the coach of each team. The coaching factor in preseason, unlike the regular season, is the strongest single predictive element. It’s a good idea to get to know the personalities and attitudes of the various coaches. Some coaches do not care if they lose a preseason game, while some coaches hate to lose any game at all – even exhibition games.
DOES A COACH HAVE A GOAL OF WINNING THE GAME?
Last year, we made Minnesota (-3.5) a top-rated Money Play when they hosted Arizona in Week 1 of the Pre-Season. One big factor was Minnesota’s Mike Tice. The coach had not stressed winning exhibition games before, but last year he changed his tune, and we were paying attention..."Check out what New England and Carolina did last year," Tice said before facing the Cardinals. Indeed, last season's Super Bowl participants each produced 4-0 preseasons. Coincidence? "I don't think so," said Tice. "Winning breeds more winning. Because of how the season ended, because of the shock and the depression we were in as a football team, winning is the only thing that's going to cure that. So it's important for us to have an exceptional preseason. Winning's a habit. It needs to become a habit." They were by far the strongest comments we had heard that early in the preseason regarding the desire to win practice games, and it paid off with an easy, early victory...
ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: MINNESOTA 23 ARIZONA 6
IS A ROOKIE COACH EAGER TO GET AN EXHIBITION WIN?
New coaches like to win in the preseason. Rookie coaches are naturally eager to get that first “W” under their belt to prove to themselves, the team owner, and the rest of the league they can win. Joe Gibbs was out of coaching for so long, that when he returned to Washington last year, it was like starting over, and he had his team hungry for some early success. His Redskins were taking on the Broncos in the Hall of Fame Game, and we gave the slight edge to Gibbs, despite Denver's history of extraordinary success in early exhibition games.
As we noted in our write-up selecting Washington (-1.5)...Due to Gibbs’ absence from the game for over a decade, he is not coming in with the attitude of a veteran coach just going through the preseason motions. In this situation, he is much more like a “rookie” coach who is anxious and eager to taste victory. "To be truthful ... it wasn't that big a deal," Gibbs said of the preseason. "We were more concerned with doing things right technically, and if you didn't win the game, you didn't win the game. It's definitely different now...I would hate to look bad, and the players feel that way, too. It's different when you go through the first go-around...
ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: WASHINGTON 20 DENVER 17
