    SF -140 (Tomko over Rueter)

Arizona has lost five straight and Claudio Vargas lost his last start 10-0 at Minnesota on June 8th. In fact the team Vargas has started for (Arizona or Washington) is 0-5 since May 8th and have been outscored 39-8 in those five games. Since September 27th, 2004, the team Vargas has pitched for is 0-9 in the games he’s appeared in. His ERA in his last three starts is 11.32. Brett Tomko’s ERA is nearly three runs better at home than on the road. The Giants are 31-13 with the Diamondbacks the last three years including 18-4 at home. When Vargas falters, there’s not much relief in the bullpen as Arizona’s unit has compiled a 6.46 ERA in all games this year. Since 1997, San Francisco is 44-17 against NL opponents that allow 5.3 runs or more per game. Arizona is yielding 5.5 runs a contest and in their last seven games, opposing batters are hitting a cool .289. The Diamondbacks offensively have scored six runs in their last three games. Defensively, they’ve allowed 39 in their last five contests. This makes it very difficult to win on enemy diamonds and Arizona is on a 3-10 road slide since June 1st. I’d like to see better numbers out of Tomko, although he has yielded three earned runs or less in six of 10 starts this year. Curiously, only three of those 10 starts have been at home where the Giants are 2-1 and two of those opponents (Dodgers and Pirates) scored two runs or less. In the final analysis, it’s easy to go against a pitcher whose team is 0-9 in his last nine appearances whether it be starting or relieving. Take SF –140.

    Good luck guys ,
