2 Units on Los Angeles Lakers +3½ -110
The Mavs have won five of their last six games, and come off a 95-86 victory overNew Orleans on Tuesday. Dirk Nowitzki scored 30 points and Steve Nash added 17 and Michael Finley missed his seventh straight game with a strained left hamstring. In Finley's absence, Nick Van Exel has averaged 18.6 points, 4.6 assists and 29 minutes per game. Los Angeles trails Utah by one game for sixth place in the Western Conference. The Lakers beat Memphis, 110-94, at Staples on Monday. Shaquille O'Neal scored 34 points and Kobe Bryant added 29 and eight assists. O'Neal, averaging 27.6 and shooting 56.9 percent from the field this season, is heating up heading into the post-season. He's averaged 34.9 points and has shot 62 percent over his last nine contests. Dallas and Los Angeles have split its two games this season. The Lakers erased a 30-point deficit - the biggest comeback in franchise history - in an improbable 105-103 win at Staples on December 6 . Bryant scored 21 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter as the Lakers came back from an 88-61 hole in the second-biggest fourth-quarter comeback in NBA history. Bryant hit a spinning jumper with 8.4 seconds left for the win. Nash scored 21 and Nowitzki added 18 points and 17 rebounds in a 98-72 victory on November 19 in Dallas when O'Neal was out.

    NCAA Basketball
    3 Units on Texas Tech -3½ -110
Texas Tech (21-13) seemed to be on the verge of beating St. John's in the semifinals before Red Storm point guard Marcus Hatten made a steal and a layup with 16.2 seconds remaining to hand the Red Raiders a 63-62 loss on Tuesday. Until Hatten's steal, it looked as if coach Bob Knight and Texas Tech would get to the championship game. The Red Raiders opened a 57-47 lead with a little over seven minutes to play after an 11-4 run. ``We have had a habit of doing that. We have a real habit of relaxing,'' Knight said. ``That little stretch right in there, from about seven minutes left to about six, was the whole ballgame for us.'' It's Knight's eighth trip to the NIT, and his first since 1985. He made four appearances with Army and three with Indiana. Andre Emmett led Texas Tech with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Kasib Powell added 19 points. Emmett, a junior guard, averages 6.1 rebounds and 22.1 points on 49.9 percent shooting to lead the Red Raiders this season. The Gophers (19-13) have to do a better job guarding Emmett than they did against Georgetown's Mike Sweetney in order to notch their 20th win of the season. Sweetney scored 32 points to lead the Hoyas to an 88-74 win over Minnesota on Tuesday. Rick Rickert led the Gophers with 17 points and Ben Johnson had 15. Rickert leads Minnesota in scoring at 15.9 points per game and is hitting 36.5 percent of his 3-pointers.

    4 Units on Cincinnati Reds -1½ +160 (Fogg - R, Anderson - L)
The Cincinnati Reds have not gotten off to a good start in their new home. After faltering in their first two games, the Reds will look to pick up their first win at the Great American Ball Park when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of a three-game series. Cincinnati manager Bob Boone said the Reds are anxious to get that initial victory. ``It will be nice to get that out of the way,'' Boone said. ``The fans are expecting it.'' While the Reds may not yet feel at home in their new ballpark, the Pirates certainly appear comfortable. After opening the season with a 10-1 drubbing on Monday, Pittsburgh kept Cincinnati winless with a 7-4 victory on Wednesday. Kevin Young and Jason Kendall each hit two-run homers in the eighth inning, and Kendall admitted he would not mind playing more games at the Great American Ball Park. ``I like it,'' said Kendall, who homered in both games. ``It's legit all around. It's a great ballpark.'' The Pirates, who have had 10 straight losing seasons, are now 2-0 for the first time since 1998. ``Right now, we're just swinging the bats and things are happening,'' Young said. ``We can do a lot of things.'' Young said the Pirates' experience gives them reason for optimism. They added veterans in the offseason -- Young is now sharing first base duties with Randall Simon -- and opened without a rookie on the roster for the first time since 1991.

Nice 4 unit loser on the Reds. Did you know the game is over? I can see trying to post a winner after the fact, but a loser for your top play??
