Both teams come in not playing the greatest basketball but Alabama more so. The Tide were fortunate to even get in the tournament and now will do their best to make the critics wrong. Unfortunately they aren't at home and will be playing the Hoosiers who came in as underdogs last season and made it to the championship game. Alabama is just 5-9 their last 14 games and getting blown out by Vanderbilt in the first round of the SEC tournament their last game. Indiana meanwhile has won 4 of their last 6 with wins over Penn State and Michigan in the Big Ten tournament, followed by a gutsy effort against eventual tournament champion Illinois, the Hoosiers put two months of frustration and soul-searching behind them. "We feel like we are playing better than we have all year," said senior guard Tom Coverdale, who earned a spot on the all-tournament five. "We are playing the best defensively we have all year. That is the most important thing around tournament time, that and executing your halfcourt offense. Those are two things we did pretty well." Davis was pleased to see the warrior come out in Coverdale once more. "I can look in Coverdale's eyes again," coach Mike Davis said. "He has got that bounce in his step. He is feeling good about where he is as a player." As a team, Davis likes the way they are playing and that couldn't happen at a better time. "We are ready now," Davis said. "I feel good about this team again. The guys are excited. You can feel it in the air. This is the biggest time in college basketball." Alabama finished just 7-10 in conference play. Topping the list of Alabama's concerns: re-discovering the post power of Erwin Dudley, restoring confidence to freshman Kennedy Winston, picking up the team defense, and finding its shooting eye. That's a lot to try to figure out in a short amount of time. Dudley had not scored less than 14 points in a game since Feb. 1 when he posted 7 against LSU, then 6 against Vanderbilt in the Tide's horrific first-round SEC tournament loss. The 6-8, 260-pound senior, facing endless double teams, shot a combined 6-of-17 in the LSU and Vandy losses, and accounted for 15 rebounds. Summing up his troubles, "I haven't been so productive the last couple of games," Dudley said. "Hopefully I'll be better playing a team from outside the conference." That isn't what you want to hear coming from your supposed superstar, blaming it on the competition. This Alabama team has no business being here while Indiana is picking up their play. Look for the Hoosiers to send the Tide packing early.
