The time has come to crown a new MAC Champion. Kent surprised many last season with their Cinderella trip in the NCAA tournament but now it is the year of the Chippewas to make some noise. Central Michigan has shot over 50%on the season and are ranked 4th in the country at 50.5%. Kent is high on the charts also at 49.1% but looking at recent play shows a better picture. In their last 5 games, the Chips are shooting 51.6% compared to 44.0% for the Golden Flashes. During this time, they are averaging nearly 10 more ppg than their season average. Looking back at the past 10 games, Central Michigan is shooting 52.7% while Kent in shooting 45.4%, the same differential. Much of this can be attributed to the solid interior play of C Chris Kaman (MAC Player of the Year) and F Mike Manciel who are shooting 59% combined (367-623). The Chips have an edge on the defensive side of the ball as well as they are allowing just 40% shooting their last 5 and 44% their last 10. Kent is allowing 51.1% and 48% respectively. Kent won the only meeting this season 82-78, a game that Central Michigan lead by as many as14 points. However, 17 CMU turnovers led to 24 Golden Flash points. Kent had just nine miscues. Also, Kaman played only eight minutes in the first half because of foul trouble. The Chips have won 9 of their last 10 and 16 of their last 19. After a great start on the season Kent has had their troubles recently going just 4-6 their last 10.
