Middle Tennessee St. -2.5 (3 Units)
The Blue Raiders finished in second place in the East division of the Sun Belt this year much to the surprise of many. First-year head coach Kermit Davis, Jr. was named Coach of the Year and junior guard Tommy Gunn was named to first team honors. This is a well-coached and well-balanced team that could make some noise in the tournament. And because they are in the Sun Belt, they will need to win it in order to advance to the post season. The Raiders finished the season 5-8 on the road but finished 4-3 in conference play. Conversely, South Alabama finished the year 3-10 on the road and 2-6 in the conference. The Jaguars did finish on a high note, winning their last three games but what does it really show? They defeated North Texas (the worst team in the conference), William Carey (who?) and New Orleans (who were without their best player and all-first team forward Hector Romero). One of those two conference road wins came at Middle Tennessee and the Raiders have not forgotten. "We know what they did last time we played and it happened on our home court and that is something you can't get over." senior F William Pippen said about the Jaguar loss. The Raiders come in the hotter shooting team, hitting 50% from the floor compared to 40% for South Alabama in each team's last 5 games. On the other side of the ball, the Jaguars allowed 58% shooting while Middle Tennessee allowed 41% in the same time frame. The Blue Raiders come in as the better team right now and they are the better-coached team as well. Look for some payback on Sunday.
