Northern Iowa -7 (3 Units)
The opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament matches #7 seed Northern Iowa against #10 seed Indiana St. The Sycamores had a dreadful regular season campaign, going 6-23 overall, 0-14on the road and 2-16 in conference play. The Panthers won both regular season meetings in easy fashion, by 13 on the road and 20 at home. Northern Iowa finished the season a roll, winning four of its last five games. Despite the fact that Southwest Missouri St. edged UNI, 52-51 on March 3, the Panthers had put together their longest win streak. Heading into the league tourney, UNI is 6-4 in its last 10 games. On the other hand, Indiana St. lost 16 of their last 17, their only win being a 1-point home win over Drake. They went 2-13-2 ATS during this 17 game stretch, the only wins as double digit underdogs. In Northern Iowa's last three contests, the Panthers have held their opponents to less than 40 percent shooting from the field. UNI held Indiana State to a season-low 39 points on 24.4 percent field goal shooting on Feb. 26. A big advantage for the Panthers is their strength behind the three-point line coupled with the weakness of the Sycamores from that area. Through 29 games this season, Northern Iowa has made 200 three-pointers and is connecting on 37.9 percent (200-for-528) of its shots from beyond the arc. Indiana St. shoots 34% offensively but their problem is on the defensive side where they are allowing 40% away from home and 44% their last 4 games. The Sycamores are cooked and are ready for this dreadful season to end. Northern Iowa has had a down year as well although not nearly as bad and their recent solid play will get them the easy win tonight.
