Going through the games two days ago I was hoping for a 16-18 point spread with this one. Never imagined Vegas would only make it -13. Early action has been going towards James Madison. I recommend to hold off and watch this line if it continues to drop just let it. Tip off isnt until 6PM CST.

This should easily be a 20 pt win for Old Dominion. Even the coach for James Madison is pulling for Old Dominion (lol see article below).

It would be the biggest upset in the Colonial Athletic Association by far this season and a treat for anyone who pulls for the underdog.

But don’t expect anyone in the CAA outside of James Madison to be rooting for the Dukes (6-20 overall, 3-14 in the CAA) when they play Old Dominion at 7 p.m. today in their regular-season finale at the Convocation Center. The rest of the league has a big reason to be behind the Monarchs, at least for now.

With over 20 wins already on their resume, the Monarchs, in the event of a conference tournament loss, have a strong case to be the league’s first at-large selection since 1986.

ODU (24-5, 14-3) has already clinched the No. 1 seed in the CAA Tournament next week, and, if they win out, they’ll finish with 28 victories.

Navy’s 1985-86 team which featured future Hall-of-Famer David Robinson and went 30-5, is the only CAA team that has ever finished with a higher win total.

The rest of the CAA hopes the Monarchs will get to 27 and stop in the CAA conference tournament final. The team that would defeat them would get an automatic bid into the NCAAs. With an RPI that is now at 39 and will likely be higher if it wins out until the tournament final, there will be a good chance ODU will be selected to the NCAA tournament, giving the league two NCAA bids for the first time since 1986.

A win total of 27 was enough to get Richmond an at-large bid in 1986 when Robinson’s Navy team took the league’s automatic invitation.

"I certainly am hopeful that ODU doesn’t win the conference tournament," UNC-Wilmington coach Brad Brownell said. "If they don’t somehow win it, and they end up with 27 or 28 wins, they’ve done a good enough job that the league could get two teams in the tournament."

Getting two bids would be a major step for a league that has been trying to move up to the top tier of the so-called mid-major conferences. Ranked 14th among the 31 conferences according to the Ratings Power Index, the CAA is gaining respect. It’s behind such successful mid-majors as the West Coast Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference, however, which have increased in status with the success of conference members Gonzaga and Southern Illinois respectively.

The success of those teams has brought attention to their leagues, which has in turn increased respect for them among NCAA Tournament selection committee members, earning them additional bids. The additional bids have brought increased television exposure, which has helped teams in recruiting.

For those reasons, even JMU coach Dean Keener is rooting for ODU – except for today.

"At the end of the day, as a coach in the CAA, I’m rooting for multiple postseason bids," Keener said. "I think that would be good for everyone in the league."

His Dukes could do major damage to that prospect, however if they knock off the Monarchs. ODU is coming off a 66-63 home loss to Hofstra on Wednesday and has lost two of its last three games. A loss to JMU, ranked 302 in last week’s RPI ratings would likely crush the Monarchs’ chances of making it in without winning the tournament.

Knowing that, ODU coach Blaine Taylor has tried to keep his players’ heads on straight.

"All of this talk has been fun for others and it’s good for the league," Taylor said. "But none of that is really in our psyche right now. There’s one automatic bid for the winner of the league tournament, and we’re going to go for it."

It will be hard to anyone to stop ODU. The Monarchs may have the league’s deepest and most talented squad.

The team is built around junior forward Alex Loughton, the CAA’s Preseason Player of the Year and a favorite to be named Player of the Year.

Though his averages (13.5 ppg, 8.2 rpg) aren’t quite as high as last year (16.6 ppg, 8.7 rpg), his season has been more remarkable. He faced double teams for most of the early season, and instead of trying to fight through them, he got his teammates involved. When he has had to step up and score, he’s done so. He averages 16.5 points per game in CAA contests and has scored in double figures in 13 straight games.

"He’s such an unselfish player," Taylor said. "He’s a great team captain and he’s been very good night after night, especially during the conference season. We have a very unselfish team and he’s personified that unselfishness."

The Monarchs have two other players averaging more than 10 points per game in sophomore guard Isaiah Hunter (13.1 ppg) and sophomore forward Arnaud Dahi (11.1 ppg), and several others that are just below double digits. They also have the CAA’s stingiest defense, allowing a league-low 60.5 points per game and causing a league-high 17.3 turnovers per game.

Knocking off the Monarchs would be a huge boost for the Dukes, who are entering the game with a two-game winning streak and are hoping to continue it going into next weekend’s CAA Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum.

JMU will be celebrating senior day for walk-on guards John Goodman and Jason McGraw. Goodman joined the squad before last season, and McGraw tried out for the team at the beginning of the season. Though playing at JMU was a short experience for both, they both said it was one they deeply enjoyed.

"I’m thankful for each and every one of my teammates and coaches," McGraw said. "When you lose 20 games in a season there’s a lot of frustration, but the enjoyment I’ve taken from the time I’ve spent with those guys far surpasses the frustration of any of the losses we’ve had this season."
