    THURSDAY FREE PLAY

    7pm ET
    #20 Wisconsin (17-6) at #10 Michigan State (19-4)

    Recommended Play: Michigan St -8

    Preview courtesy of TSN -

A much-anticipated Big Ten matchup ensues tonight in East Lansing, as the 10th-ranked Michigan State Spartans host the 20th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers. Wisconsin is currently alone in third place in the league standings, two games back of the Spartans with only four to play, including tonight. The Badgers have won two of their last three contests, including a 76-50 triumph over hated rival Michigan in the most recent outing last week. Although they are a stellar 13-1 at home, the Badgers have won only four of their nine road games. Michigan State has lost only one contest in East Lansing this season, and that was to undefeated and top-ranked Illinois. The Spartans won't be able to catch the Illini for first place in the Big Ten, but a second-place finish appears to be a strong possibility. Ton Izzo's team has put together five consecutive victories, with the most recent coming last Saturday by a score of 68-57 over Purdue. Back on January 16th, Wisconsin recorded a hard-fought 62-59 victory over Michigan State, but the Spartans still own a 63-53 advantage in the all-time series.

Offensively, Wisconsin is averaging a solid-yet-unspectacular 69.5 ppg this season, but the team has been able to limit its opponents to a mere 60.2 ppg.

Rebounding has been a strength for the Badgers, as they are pulling down 4.3 rpg more than their foes on average. Mike Wilkinson certainly deserves credit for much of the team's success, as he has started all 23 games and is scoring 14.2 ppg on 52.2 percent shooting from the floor. Far from just a scorer, Wilkinson is pulling down a team-high 7.3 rpg to go along with 27 blocks, more than half of the club's total. As for Alando Tucker, he is contributing a team-high 14.6 ppg and 6.8 rpg as the other half of the squad's tremendous duo. Against Michigan in last week's 26-point blowout, Wisconsin, finished with 20 assists against only seven turnovers, and it earned a 39-28 rebounding advantage as well. Wilkinson finished with 22 points and nine rebounds, and Zach Morley pitched in 12 points off the bench. As for Tucker and Ray Nixon, they rounded out the unit's double-digit scorers with 10 points apiece.

Michigan State jumped out to a 10-point lead over Purdue at halftime on Saturday and was able to hold on for the 11-point victory. The Spartans played tremendous defense in the contest, limiting the Boilermakers to 36.8 percent shooting from the field, including a 4-of-20 showing from behind the arc. MSU also earned a 37-27 rebounding advantage as well and outscored Purdue 22-4 in bench points. Leading the way in the win was Alan Anderson and Maurice Ager with 12 points apiece. Chris Hill tallied 11 points for the Spartans, and Drew Neitzel added 10 points. With five double-digit scorers in the lineup, Izzo's squad obviously possesses tremendous balance. Ager is netting 13.7 ppg to lead the way, and Anderson is second with 12.1 ppg. Paul Davis, who was held to four points by Purdue, adds 12.0 ppg and a team-high 7.1 rpg to the lineup, and Shannon Brown is scoring an even 11.0 ppg. Rounding out the group is Chris Hill, who is tallying 10.0 ppg to go along with his team-leading total of 101 assists.

The Spartans are one of the nation's most talented groups, and they will successfully avenge the earlier loss to Wisconsin. Expect Michigan State to jump on top early and never look back.

    Good luck
    Mike Thomas
