Northwestern +2.5 (2 Units)
Ohio St. saw their postseason hopes diminish greatly with their loss to Iowa last week. They now sit at 6-8 in the Big Ten and in 9th place in the conference. It was a tough emotional loss as the Buckeyes held Iowa to only 17 first half points but gave up 54 in the second half in their 71-64 loss. That game was over a week ago but the effects will still be felt. “In all the years I've coached college basketball, I don't think I've ever been as disappointed as I was with our play in the second half," coach Jim O'Brien said. "It has nothing to do with the way we played. It has everything to do with what was going on in our heads." A physical loss is one thing in college but an emotional loss for these kids is much different. "They really exploited all the things we don't do well. Our defense was nonexistent in the second half," O'Brien said, pointing to a lack of effort as the cause. "We felt like this was a very meaningful game for us." How can O’Brien get his team up for a game at Northwestern, a team they have defeated 8 consecutive times? Ohio St. is just 2-7 on the road this season with wins at Penn St. and at Iowa. Northwestern is a respectable 10-6 at home that includes wins over Purdue and Indiana. They are shooting 45% from the floor compared to 38% for the Buckeyes. The Wildcats are coming off a double overtime home win over Penn St. on Saturday. It was an exhausting win, but a win that they can build on and carry forward into this game. As stated earlier, the Buckeyes have owned this series but the Wildcats are in a very good situation to get their first win since 1998 over Ohio St.
