Preview by The Sports Network:
After a loss over the weekend, the 19th-ranked Connecticut Huskies will attempt to get back on track when they pull into Morgantown for tonight's Big East Conference clash with the West Virginia Mountaineers. Since opening the season with wins in eight of its first nine games, UConn has split its last six decisions. The three losses during the current shaky stretch have come against teams currently ranked in the Top 25, and the most recent setback came on Saturday by a score of 76-66 to No. 21 Pittsburgh. At 3-2 in the league standings, the Huskies need a win tonight to avoid falling into the middle of the pack. As for West Virginia, it has fallen apart since a 10-0 start that earned the squad a spot among the nationally ranked. The Mountaineers has lost five of their last six games, including Saturday's 72-64 setback at seventh-ranked Syracuse. UConn has won the last four meetings with West Virginia and owns a 9-2 lead in the all-time series between the two teams.
There is no lack of talent in the lineup for Jim Calhoun's UConn team, as four players are averaging in double figures. Josh Boone has emerged as one of the nation's top frontcourt performers, as he is scoring 15.4 ppg on 64 percent overall shooting to go along with 9.6 rpg and 48 blocks. Veteran guard Rashad Anderson adds 13.2 ppg to the lineup, but his 33.5 percent overall shooting is embarrassing. Charlie Villanueva is contributing 12.3 ppg and 8.4 rpg, and Rudy Gay rounds out the group with 10.5 ppg and 6.0 rpg. The Huskies are netting 80.3 ppg while limiting opponents to 65.5 ppg, and they are outrebounding foes by a staggering 14.5 rpg. Unfortunately, UConn shot only 39.1 percent from the field against Pittsburgh on Saturday and was even outrebounded by a narrow 38-36 margin. Anderson nailed 5-of-10 three-pointers and finished with 19 points in defeat, and Villanueva pitched in 14 points and 10 boards. As for Boone, he was limited to six points and four boards before f!
ouling out.
In the loss to Syracuse over the weekend, West Virginia connected on only 35.4 percent of its field goal attempts, including a 10-of-32 effort from three- point range. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers permitted the Orange to shoot 47.2 percent overall. Another major factor in the loss for WVU was that it was outscored 16-8 from the foul line. Patrick Beilein led the way in defeat with 17 points off the bench on 5-of-11 shooting from behind the arc. Tyrone Sally, Mike Gansey and D'or Fischer all pitched in with 11 points in the loss. The Mountaineers are averaging 69.2 ppg as compared to just 62.6 ppg for the opposition, but those numbers are much more representative of the early success than the team's play against Big East competition. Sally leads the club with 11.6 ppg, and Gansey is close behind in the scoring department with 11.0 ppg. Fischer rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.8 ppg, and he has blocked 43 shots.
Good luck
Mike Thomas
