**TOP RATED PLAY OF THE WEEK selection on:
ST MARY'S +1
The Gaels got spanked by 23 pts at Home by this Bronco's team, as a 10 pt favorite back on 1-15...and that has still got to be fresh on the minds of St Mary's.....In that game, St Mary's offense was simply no where to be found...as they shot only 26% from the field going just 13-for-50, 11.1% from 3 pt land going 2-of-18, and only 50% from the line going 14-of-28...Eeesssh!....But, not only did they get out shot, they were also outboarded by 10 rebs, grabbing just 36 boards to SC's 46 rebs...and they also committed more TO's with 16 to the Broncos 13, in that one....Although this one was at Home, it was definately a terrible night and a terrible spot for the Gaels against SC.
What is ironic about what happened in this one, is that it was like a reverse deja vu situation and outcome...as last years game at SC, it was the Bronco's who was the Home team, whose offense was no where to be found, and their shooting % was almost the same low % which the Gaels shot in the Jan 15 game....SC stunk it up in all 3 shooting categories, held the TO edge, and was also outboarded by the visiting St Mary's team, just like the Gaels did in the Jan 15th game...But, last year, it was the Bronco's who suffered the embarrassing Home loss to the visiting Gaels by 30 pts....similar to like what they did to the Gaels this year and on their Home court as well.....Can You Say, Deja Vu in Reverse?
Anyways, looking at this years stats from the first game, it seems this game was lost on the boards where SC dominated, as they grabbed 10 more rebounds and had 11 more attempts, leading to 9 more buckets and 18 more pts then the Gaels could match.....But, besides SC's dominance on the boards which gave them the opportunity to go 26-of-61 for 42.6% from the field,...the Broncos, struggled shooting from behind the Arc going just 2-of-12 for 16.7%, and also from the line, making just 11-of-18 FT attempts for just 61.1%....In my opinion, both teams did not play solid at all...But, I think that the Gaels excuse or reasoning for them not playing up to their potential has to be somewhat the result of their previous Big Win over Conf Fav and Nationally Ranked Gonzaga, a few days previous to this game...And which caused them to suffer a delayed Hangover effect because of it.
This Hangover, seemed to be an inevitable situation which the Gael's were going to go through,...which showed up in the 2nd hf of their next game vs AF...In this game, the Gaels jumped out to an impressive DD lead going into the half....but, when they came out for the 2nd hf, they were flat out sleep walking and flat.....Fortunately for them, they had just enough to survice and hold on to a 1 pt win....If there was a few minutes left in that game, AF would of came back to win it outright,...thus possibly affecting the outcome of their next game against SC on Jan 15th....But it didn't, and after that dismal, no focus, no effort, flat 2nd HF vs AF...it seemed that the Hangover effect had definately crept up on the Gaels full on...and which only heightened, because they were able to survive that AF rally, thus continuing the Hangover effects upon them....This Hangover carried over to their next game vs a hungray SC team looking for Revenge from last season's blowout loss at Home, and also looking to go on a run of their own, showed it effect in the ass spanking the Broncos gave them winning by 23 pts....SC had the confidence building up in them, as they was coming off a solid game against Gonzaga, only losing by 4 pts...which they then followed up with a solid 13 pt win at home over Portland.....This was the Perfect Situation favoring the Broncos going into their last game with the Gaels, as they caught the Gael's in a perfect situation, which they took full advantage of, handing them a payback loss.
Now, the situation in this one seems to be in reverse again, as it is St Mary's who has the edge and better situations coming into this game....One reason for this, is that SC is off of 2 BAD consecutive road losses to teams which, one, they already beat (Portland) and the other, against the Conf best team (Gonzaga)..who they played the previous game to the end,...Yet, these two games resulted in two complete deflating Blowout losses...The Broncos lost to the Zags, probably hurt the most, as it confirmed again to them, that they are simply not one of the Top Teams in the Conf...and thus going through this, has got to hurt them mentally and emotionally....The end result of the Broncos last two games was two deflating losses by DD's, which also extended their lossing streak to 3 of their last 4 games....The Broncos, after such a promising run, definately will lack the emotions, the confidence, motivation, and also in their focus coming into this one....Plus, probably making matters harder for them to getting focused is the fact that they have demolished this St Mary's squad by 23 pts already.....This situation, sets them up IMO to receive a rude awaking from the Gaels, just like the one that they gave to them back on Jan 15th....This is simply not a good situation, IMO, for the Broncos at all to be in...and especially because this Gael's squad seems to be peeking right now...
St Mary's, as mentioned, comes into this one on a role...winning 5 of their last 6 games....since that loss at Home to SC....The only loss, in this span, was to Conf leader Gonzaga, a game which they could of won, but, a game which I think they are satisfied in at least getting a split with in Reg Season Play....This loss didnt seem to follow them, as they were able to beat Portland on the road, even after allowing the Pilots to shoot 56.3% from the field and 54.5% from behind the Arc...This was a good sign for them, especially as this Pilot team, a few days prior completely dismantled this SC team by 13 pts.
Anyways, based on the recent and current situations, as well as, the outcomes of games played between both of the teams, I feel that the Gael's are definately in a better position both mentally, emotionally, and physically, then the Bronco's are in....And this should result in them recording yet another solid Road win, while allowing them to also make up for that embarrassing 23 pt Home loss to the Broncos, which I am sure is still on the minds of this veteran St Mary's team.....In an recent interview with one of the Sr G's, getting this game is one of their unfinished goals that they have marked, as needing to obtain on their run towards the West Coast Regular Season Conf Title...Again, not a good situation for the Broncos to be in...and being at home, I feel wont matter as the Broncos are only 5-5 in their House on the year, so Home Court Advantage is not that strong...Which is another edge that the better and more talented team in the Gaels will have.
Some Stats, Trends, and Info...I like also favoring the Gaels in this game....
-In the last 5 games, St Mary's has gone 4-1, posting their highest scoring and shooting averages of the season with a 73.2 ppg and 49.0% shooting from the field average...The Gael's offense seems to have finally shown what it is capable of producing..and that is a balanced scoring attack to go along with their solid defensive play.
-SC, in their last 5 games, is only 2-3, and their scoring and shooting averages has fallen during this span to 73 ppg and 40.5% shooting from the field...not to bad....But, what is non-complimenting to them during this span, is that they have allowed their opponents to score a high of 74.6 ppg, shot a high of 49.4% from the field, and also drain 43.6% of their shots from behind the Arc ...The Broncos defensive play, during their last 5 games, has simply fallen down further, from their already poor stat on the defensive end, where they ranke last in the conf in Scoring Defense...Poor defensive play is why this Bronco team has lost 3 of their last 4 games...one at Home vs Sf which they definately could of, should of, and needed to win, but ended up losing by 2 pts.
-St Mary's has an explosive backcourt in Marigrey, Rowland, and Sanders...who is being complimented, by the solid play from their inside guys in Kickert, Adjiwanou, and Collins..giving them a very balanced offensive attack...which along, with the Gaels solid defensive play, will simply make them a team that could compete with a lot of teams in the country.
-St Mary's is ranked 2nd in the Conf in Rebounding Margin..
-St Mary's is ranked 1st in the Conf in 3 pt FG% Def...While SC is last in the Conf at 8th in this category.
-St Mary's is ranked 1st in in the Conf in FG% Def....while SC is ranked 6th in this category.
-St Mary's is ranked 4th in Conf in FG% shooting.....while SC, although averaging a higher ppg average is only ranked 6th in FG% shooting in the Conf.
-St Mary's is ranked 2nd in the Conf in Scoring Margin...while SC is ranked 5th.
-St Mary's is ranked # 1 in the Conf in Scoring Defense, only allowing opponents to average just 61 ppg.... SC is ranked last in the Conf (8th) in Scoring Defense allowing their opponents to average 73 ppg on them...
-SC is ranked 3rd in the Conf in Scoring Offense...and St Mary's 7th, but again St Mary's counters with having the Best Scoring Defense in the West Coast Conf Overall, and more specifically, in defending both the field and the Arc, and they also are ranked higher in shooting FG% and in Scoring Margin....These solid stats that St Mary's has, says loud and clear, that they have the advantages between the two teams...and this should equate to them getting a win today.
Side Note: The Bronco's are another team, like WSU is, where their G's are leading the team in rebounding...with G Perkins (leads team with 5.9 rpg) and G Bailey (2nd in rpg with 4.7 average)....This was one of the main reasons why I went against the Cougars last night in their game against an Oregon St team, who not only was a better balanced team...but also whose big men took care of the reboarding down low....I feel that it is not a good thing, most times, when your guards lead the team in scoring, and also in rebounding as well...This kind of deficiency down low is something that is going to catch up to teams like SC, and it happens when facing better balanced teams, like St Mary's is, who not only have an advantage on the offensive end...but, who also matches this play with solid, discipline, and tough defensive play on the other end...
Tonight, I see the Gael's continuing on their run to the Conf Title, as they only sit one game back of Gonzaga, who played and won last night...With St Marys and the Zags splitting out their 2 Reg season games this year, that title will go to whomever is capable of not slipping up the most down the stretch....With all that St Mary's has to gain, and with them having the more favorable situations on their side in this one, I cannot see them failing to secure this one in a solid way....St Mary's discipline play on defense and their improved play offensive should lead them to record their 6 win in 7 games.....Oh yeah, and also get a bit of Payback for that Home Brain Fart Loss that they suffered to this Bronco team, which put them in a tie for second with Gonzaga, instead of solely being in first place in the conf....No more slip ups for the Gaels, as they are one of the few teams in the land who has already recorded 20 wins, but who are still playing in the shadows of Gonzaga, ...which means, that they definately need to get this win today at SC, as the Broncos were able to beat NC and Stanford on their floor earlier in the year...and getting a win, today would definately turn some heads in their direction...Something they need, inorder to break out from under the shadows of the Zags, and inorder for them to get consideration for a bid to the Big Dance......Take St Mary's as a TOP RATED PLAY OF THE WEEK selection .......GL and Aloha CC.
Gang....please dont mine the typos, or grammatical errors....to tired to edit and in a rush to get this out to you, before the line moves....The rest of the plays will be up later....so check back for them.....GL and Aloha CC.
