The battle for third place in the Missouri Valley Conference starts on Saturday as the Shockers and the Bears sit tied with identical 11-5 records. Wichita St. can wrap up third place with a win based on their sweep of the Bears this season, even if the two still finish tied. SMS has had a surprisingly good season as they were picked to finish near the bottom of the conference by many publications. They have done it by beating the lower echelon teams in the conference - they are 11-0 against the bottom 6 teams who all have losing records both in the conference and overall. However they have had troubles with the good teams as witnessed by their 0-5 record against Creighton, Southern Illinois and Wichita St. They now must face the Shockers once again who are fresh off a very disappointing home loss to Bradley on Tuesday after winning their previous 4 games including a win over Creighton. In their last 5 games, Wichita St. is clicking on offense averaging 80 ppg on 50% shooting from the floor and 43% from behind the arc. They are also hitting 77% from the free throw line compared to just 67% for the Bears. Defensively, they are allowing 13 more ppg than SMS but that number includes 86 points given up to Bradley in their last game. The Shockers are a solid 7-1 ATS on the road this season including 4-0 as an underdog. We see a dogfight today similar to their first meeting in a game that should come down to the final minutes.
