    8pm ET
    Illinois-Chicago (5-7) at Loyola-Chicago (3-9)

    Recommended Play: Illinois Chi -2

Preview courtesy of The Sports Network:

The Ramblers of Loyola-Chicago shoot for back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they host the Flames of Illinois-Chicago in Horizon League action tonight at the Gentile Center. Loyola hasn't seen too many bright days so far in 2004-05, winning just two games before the turn of the calendar, but the squad started off 2005 on the right foot. On Monday night the Ramblers were holding court against Cleveland State at home and registered a 70-55 victory over the Vikings to put an end to an eight-game slide. Meanwhile the Flames were also in action three nights ago and captured a 62-56 win over Youngstown State in Ohio. The triumph was the second in the last three outings for UIC, making the squad 1-2 in league play. The Flames will take one last crack at a non-conference opponent on Saturday afternoon (aside from Bracket Buster Saturday in mid February) as it takes on the Penn Quakers in the opener of a three-game homestand at UIC Pavilion. This game marks the 30th in the city rivalry, with Illinois-Chicago holding a 21-8 lead over Loyola in a series that dates back only to 1986. The Flames have won six in a row overall, but the Ramblers are 7-7 versus the Flames on their home floor.

Except for Justin Bowen who finished with eight points, every starter for the Flames scored in double figures in the win over the Penguins on Monday night, beginning with Jovan Stefanov who tallied a career-high tying 16 points.

Cedrick Banks added 12 points, Elliott Poole 11 and Armond Williams 10 points in the triumph, even as the team registered only 24 rebounds and failed to hit a single three-point basket in five tries. UIS shot 51 percent from the floor for the game, making the team a perfect 31-0 since 2000-01 in games where the unit has knocked down at least half its field goal attempts. Banks (15.2 ppg) can be one of the more explosive scorers in the Horizon League, but even though he is playing almost 38 minutes per game, at the moment he is making just 34.5 percent of his shots. Stefanov and Williams are each dropping in 10 ppg, but Banks is the only real threat outside the arc, despite his 31 percent accuracy at the moment.

Majak Kou was virtual magic off the bench for the Ramblers on Monday night as he tallied 22 points, shooting 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-7 beyond the arc, in the victory over Cleveland State. Blake Schilb added 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, but his 4-of-14 shooting from the floor was symbolic of the Loyola struggles as they went from converting 53.3 percent from the field in the first half to just 29.2 percent after the break.

Thankfully Schilb (8-of-8) and his mates made all but one of 16 attempts at the free-throw line following the break to save face. Schilb is one of the few players in the nation who is currently leading his team in scoring (14.8 ppg), rebounding (5.8 rpg), assists (45) and steals (23), which makes him an invaluable slave to the program. However, even with his Herculean efforts the team is still scoring a mere 63.8 ppg and is being beaten on the glass by more than six and a half rebounds per contest.

Schilb simply can't carry the Ramblers for this entire season, and at some point he is going to begin to break down. The Flames have managed to get a little more scoring out of critical players to move them along, enough to get a win tonight if nothing else.

    Good luck
    Mike Thomas
