Toledo Rockets at East Carolina Pirates 7:00 PM ET

    Toledo Rockets +3 –110 (2 Units)

We are still not sold on this Pirates team who is 3-2 but is coming off a lopsided win against a D-II school and lost by 30 points prior to that to Gardner-Webb. Moussa Badiane leads the team in scoring at 16.5 ppg but he did tally 28 in their last contest so in reality, he is averaging around 12 ppg. Overall, this is a very young team that has to deal with the loss of four of his top six scorers from a season ago. They have started 5 freshmen and sophomores so far this year while 4 freshmen are seeing significant playing time. That will be a great benefit later in the season but right now it is still a learning experience. East Carolina is 11th in CUSA in scoring and their youth definitely shows by them committing 15 turnovers per game, also 11th in the conference. Toledo is a surprising 0-2 to start the season but the losses to Vanderbilt and Wright St. aren’t completely shocking as those teams should have good seasons. Vanderbilt will be a force again in the SEC while the Raiders are 3-1 with their lone loss at Arizona. The biggest surprise is the lack of production from guard Keith Triplett, who is averaging just 7.5 ppg and 4 turnovers per game. Triplett earned all-MAC First-Team honors this past season after leading the league in steals (2.6 spg), ranking second in scoring (19.6 ppg) and 11th in assists (3.1 apg). Their backcourt of him, Sammy Villegas and Justin Ingram is averaging only 23 ppg and they have a surprisingly bad 0.75 A/TO ratio. Triplett has hit only 11% of his shots from behind the arc after hitting 41.5% last season so that will come around especially against a team that has allowed 95 ppg to their last two D-1 opponents. The Rockets are getting great production in their frontcourt off the bench as Florentino Valencia and Anton Currie are averaging a combined 27 ppg and 11.5 rpg. Toledo has started slowly in each of its first two contests, falling behind 11-2 at Vanderbilt and 14-4 at Wright State. Having it happen twice will be enough motivation for the Rockets to come out strong in this one.

    Tuesday recap:

Creighton Bluejays at Xavier Musketeers 7:30 PM ET

    Creighton Bluejays +4.5 –110 (2 Units)

Xavier enters this game 2-1 but they have slipped by their two opponents, winning against Oakland at home and defeating Miami in overtime down in Florida. Their loss came against an underrated Miami Ohio team at home where it has always been a tough place to come into and win. The Musketeers are having some depth issues as they have lost their best forward off the bench, Brandon Cole. That basically takes them down to a 6-man rotation with 3 other players averaging around 8 mpg. Xavier returns no double-figure scorers from last year’s team. Through the first three games they have only one player (Brian Thornton at 12.0 ppg.) that is averaging in double figures in scoring. Creighton has jumped out to a 5-0 start and are coming off impressive back-to-back wins over Missouri and Ohio St. that gave them the Guardians Classic championship. This is an experienced group that goes 9 deep, which includes 6 juniors and seniors. The perfect start has provided the Bluejays with some much-needed confidence. Mix in that the last two wins have come against teams from the Big 12 and Big Ten, and that certainly does nothing to deflate the Bluejays' self image. What has been the glue of this team early on is the play of Tyler McKinney, who set a tournament record with 30 assists in four games. He committed just six turnovers, scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Not bad for a guy whom doctors feared might never play again last spring after he received two corneal transplants in his right eye. He is averaging 7.4 apg, which is 11th in the country in the early part of the season. As a team, the Bluejays are 32nd in the country in A/TO ratio at 1.38, one of the most important yet undervalued stats in the game. Xavier is 83rd through three games. Their inexperience has showed through their first three games but their goal head coach Sean Miller said is that they could be performing as the team he wants it to be by the time the Atlantic 10 season starts in January.

Florida St. Seminoles at Minnesota Golden Gophers 7:30 PM ET

    Florida St. Seminoles +3 –110 (2 Units)

This is a very deep and athletic team for the Seminoles and they should be way too much for the young Gophers. Florida St. goes 11 deep with all 11 players averaging at least 15 minutes per game. The Seminoles are a disappointing 2-3 but two of those losses have been by 3 points or less while the other loss was by 10 points against Kent St., a game that was decided at the free throw line. While they were 0-2 at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times Challenge, head coach Leonard Hamilton was happy with the progress his ballclub made, despite the 22 turnovers against TCU. "I feel the guys have grown up in this tournament," Hamilton said. "We obviously executed better. To play as many guys as we did tonight, we did well." As the Seminoles continue to grasp Hamilton's defensive system, they are using greatly improved depth this season to wreak havoc on opposing offenses. Newcomers are providing the scoring balance that was lacking last season as 9 players are averaging between 6 and 9.4 ppg. Minnesota has 12 newcomers on the roster, nine of those are either redshirt freshmen or true freshmen. Between the 2000-01 and 2003-04 seasons, Minnesota lost eight scholarships and 20 official visits were cut out of a possible 36. In fact, none of the four graduating seniors on this year’s team took an official visit to Minnesota before they either signed a letter of intent or began school. Of the five letterwinners, only three will be healthy or eligible to play the first two months of the season. Only six players on the roster had played a Division I college basketball game before this season. Including Adam Boone, who is out with a torn bicep, Minnesota returns 17 percent and 25 percent of its scoring and rebounding, respectively from last season. In their last game Against the Sooners, the Gophers lacked the energy and fire they had a night earlier against the Crimson Tide. Head coach Dan Monson, however, doesn't buy the excuse of physical fatigue or an emotional letdown – it comes with age and experience. Returning to Minnesota with only one victory in three games in Alaska wasn't what the Gophers wanted.

Los Angeles Lakers at Milwaukee Bucks 8:05 PM ET

    Milwaukee Bucks –3 –110 (2 Units)

The Lakers defense has been very bad on the road, allowing 103.3 ppg away from home. In their 6 road games, they have allowed 100 or more points 4 times with only Houston and New Orleans failing to reach the century mark. Those two teams are two of the six worst scoring teams at home in the league. The Bucks are winless on the road but are 4-1 at home, averaging 100 ppg on 45.7% shooting. The home court advantage is important for them now and in their last game against Detroit, the Bucks shot over 50 percent from the field (50.7%) for the first time this season. Behind the arc, they are even better. The Bucks are shooting 46.0% from three-point range when at home, and just 32.8% when on the road. In Saturday’s win over Detroit, the Bucks shot 9-18 from behind the arc. Not only is the Bucks offense better at home, but the defense is allowing nearly 6 ppg less than on the road. Milwaukee has lost seven straight to the Lakers but it’s clear that the gap is getting closer. In those seven straight losses, the Bucks have lost by an average of 8.0 points. However, in their four most recent losses, Milwaukee has been defeated by an average of only 3.8 points. They lost by 4 points in their meeting at Los Angles on the 23rd but the teams shot an identical 49.4% from the floor while the Bucks had the edge behind the arc 75%-25% and outrebounded the Lakers 47-35. The difference was the Lakers finishing with 11 steals compared to Milwaukee’s 3. Los Angeles is only grabbing 3.8 turnovers on the road, last in the NBA. The Lakers also scored 25 of their points off Bucks turnovers. Milwaukee is averaging only 13 turnovers per game at home however, 6th best in the league. Milwaukee has the edge off the bench, as Desmond Mason’s 17.8 bench points per game is far and away the highest total among NBA bench players. When holding opponents under the 100-point mark, the Lakers are 8-0 this season but when opponents exceed 100 points, the Lakers are 0-6.
