Creighton Bluejays at Xavier Musketeers 7:30 PM ET
Creighton Bluejays +4.5 –110 (2 Units)
Xavier enters this game 2-1 but they have slipped by their two opponents, winning against Oakland at home and defeating Miami in overtime down in Florida. Their loss came against an underrated Miami Ohio team at home where it has always been a tough place to come into and win. The Musketeers are having some depth issues as they have lost their best forward off the bench, Brandon Cole. That basically takes them down to a 6-man rotation with 3 other players averaging around 8 mpg. Xavier returns no double-figure scorers from last year’s team. Through the first three games they have only one player (Brian Thornton at 12.0 ppg.) that is averaging in double figures in scoring. Creighton has jumped out to a 5-0 start and are coming off impressive back-to-back wins over Missouri and Ohio St. that gave them the Guardians Classic championship. This is an experienced group that goes 9 deep, which includes 6 juniors and seniors. The perfect start has provided the Bluejays with some much-needed confidence. Mix in that the last two wins have come against teams from the Big 12 and Big Ten, and that certainly does nothing to deflate the Bluejays' self image. What has been the glue of this team early on is the play of Tyler McKinney, who set a tournament record with 30 assists in four games. He committed just six turnovers, scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Not bad for a guy whom doctors feared might never play again last spring after he received two corneal transplants in his right eye. He is averaging 7.4 apg, which is 11th in the country in the early part of the season. As a team, the Bluejays are 32nd in the country in A/TO ratio at 1.38, one of the most important yet undervalued stats in the game. Xavier is 83rd through three games. Their inexperience has showed through their first three games but their goal head coach Sean Miller said is that they could be performing as the team he wants it to be by the time the Atlantic 10 season starts in January.
