For the 3rd straight season, one of the biggest rivalries in the Mid-American Conference will decide the league’s Western Division Championship. Toledo hosts nearby enemy Bowling Green on Tuesday in a game where the stakes could hardly be higher. The Falcons will be tied atop the MAC standings with Northern Illinois by beating Toledo, but lose the tiebreaker with the Huskies after losing to them earlier this year. Toledo can claim the West crown outright by beating Bowling Green since the Rockets toppled the Huskies at Northern Illinois in their last outing, a PRO INFO SPORTS winning selection. Whoever emerges will take on East champion Miami, Ohio next Thursday at Ford Field in Detroit.
Bowling Green continued its winning ways by routing Marshall a week ago Saturday as a nine-point home favorite, 56-35. The game was pretty close statistically across the board, but the Falcons ran away with the contest by forcing four turnovers. Toledo played itself into this position after beating Northern Illinois as a six-point road underdog, 31-17. The Rockets quickly fell behind 10-0, but prevailed compliments of a 17-0 run after halftime. Toledo dominated the Huskies in first downs (30-10), rushing yards (215-85), passing yards (297-95) and time of possession (41:23-18:37).
This game will feature 2 outstanding quarterbacks in Bowling Green’s Omar Jacobs and Toledo’s Bruce Gradkowski. Both teams are healthy, so we should see them in top form. There are several strong factors supporting the Rockets here. First of all, Bowling Green can still make it to a bowl game, but they can’t play in the MAC championship. That motivation belongs to Toledo and will have them 100% focused. While the Falcons are a good team, their numbers are a little stilted as they run up stats and scores on lesser teams. They are actually a very poor 2-12 ATS on the road vs. opponents with winning records. Meanwhile, the Rockets simply turn on the after burners at home, where they lose a game about as often as the New England Patriots drop one. Toledo is an incredible 29-1 SU in the Glass Bowl, and are 14-0 SU/11-3 ATS at home in their last 14 season finales. Spread-wise, they are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 when not favored by more than 3 TDs. Here we have the added luxury of getting points. Toledo has only been a home dog twice under coach Tom Amstutz, and they beat Pittsburgh of the Big East and Northern Illinois outright. The home team is 5-0 ATS in this series, and we see no reason for that trend to end here. The Rockets have the added motivation of avenging last year’s loss at Bowling Green that kept them out of the MAC Championship and home for the holidays.
Finally, this is obviously a must-win game for Toledo, with a playoff berth on the line. In such handicapping situations we strongly consider whether the team in question truly believes it should win. They have to believe that they deserve to be where they are and have the confidence to win the necessary game. There is no question that the Rockets have put their early-season woes behind themselves, have worked hard and earned the right to be here with their recent play, including the huge win at Northern Illinois where Bowling Green could not, and has the confidence to beat anyone at home.
