St. Mary’s Gaels vs. Memphis Tigers 7:00 PM ET

    Memphis Tigers -8.5 –110 (2 Units)

While it might come as a surprise that St. Mary’s defeated Cal to get here, it really wasn’t. Cal is missing their best player and has been picked to finish last in the Pac 10 in some places. The Bears still played good enough to win but the Gaels won the game at the foul line. With the Bears committing early fouls, St. Mary's got to the charity stripe 26 times and made 22. "We knocked down free throws down the stretch," St. Mary's forward Jonathan Sanders said. "That is what kept it from being close." The Gaels will continue to play without 3 potential starters. All-West Coast Conference guard Paul Marigney will miss the team's first seven games of the year while resolving academic issues. Marigney, who shot an impressive 41.6 percent from behind the arc last season, led the Gaels with an average of 16.0 ppg. Senior forward Frederic Adjiwanou, who led the team in rebounding is out as is transfer Erik Bond, projected to be one of the team's best shooters. The Gaels beat Belmont and Cal despite going 4-for-34 on 3-pointers. In two games, Memphis has been successful in forcing teams into bad shooting nights. Head coach John Calipari probably will continue harping on his team about defense, but in the first two games, the Tigers have held opponents to 25 and 28 percent shooting. Against George Mason, the Memphis offensive weapons along with their rebounding power created a couple of bad stretches for the Patriots. Ideally, they would like to have kept the game in the 50s, but with Memphis holding a 50-35 advantage on the boards, George Mason couldn't slow down the Tigers. Sean Banks and Rodney Carney gives the Tigers one of the best frontcourts in the country. Through the first two games, the duo is averaging 24 ppg and 14 rpg. However, the big surprise could be the emergence of freshman Richard Dorsey who is averaging 14 rpg in just over 20 minutes per game. Another freshman, Darius Washington Jr. has done a good job in taking over at the point guard position. As good as St. Mary’s is expected to be this season, they are without their best backcourt player and simply cannot compete with the athleticism of the Tigers.
